ENMU SWEEPS MIDWESTERN STATE, 15-10, 15-6, 15-6 Zias Alone in 2nd Place in LSC South
PORTALES, NM — The Zias of Eastern New Mexico University visiting Midwestern State University, 15-10, 15-6, 15-6, in a Lone Star Conference match Friday night (Oct. 29), and in the process moved into sole possession of the second place in the LSC South Division. ENMU is now 22-0 overall and 6-4 in the LSC South. Midwestern State dropped to 7-21 overall and 0-9 in LSC action.

ENMU began the night tied with Abilene Christian for second place, but the Wildcats lost at Texas A&M-Kingsville in five games. The Lady Javelinas won 12-15, 9-15, 15-13, 15-9, 15-10 over ACU. ENMU is now one game up on ACU (5-5) and TAMU-Kingsville (5-5) and a game and a half ahead of Tarleton State (4-5) and Angelo State (4-5). West Texas A&M (10-0) has already clinched the LSC South title.

The top three teams qualify for the LSC Tournament. In Friday’s win, the Zias were led by Tanya Heyko (Jr., OH, Salem, OR/Chemeketa C.C.), who blasted 13 kills and recorded 9 digs. Heather DesMarais (Sr., RS, Yakima, WA/ Columbia Basin College) contributed 11 kills and achieved a .500 hitting percentage.

The Zias received 10 kills from Irma Cobos (Sr., OH, Kermit, TX/Kermit H.S.), while Aubrey Gladstone (Jr., MB, Kennewick, WA/Columbia Basin) provided 9 digs plus 6 kills and no kill errors.

Senior setter Lindsey Davison (Kelso, WA/Columbia Basin) supplied 41 assists, increasing her school record for career assists to 2,636. Davison also earned 15 digs, and Annette Luafalemana-Tanielu (Kaunakakai, HI/Eastern Arizona College) led all players with 17 digs.

Midwestern was led by Ashley Hester, with 12 kills and 13 digs. Lisa Dwight added 10 kills and a .304 hitting percentage, while Shayna Buxton provided 33 assists and 7 digs. The Lady Indians committed 11 serving errors and finished with a .097 team attack percentage.

MSU stayed close early in the first two games. The opener was tied 7-7, before ENMU scored the next seven points on its way to a 15-10 win. In the second game, the Zias led 7-6, then pulled away for a 15-6 win. DesMarais earned 6 of her 11 kills during the game. In the third game, Eastern led 6-2, then moved out to an 11-4 advantage. The Zias won 15-6.

ENMU plays two matches on Sat., Oct. 30. The Zias open the day against LSC South rival Tarleton State at 1:00 p.m. (Mountain), then take on non-conference foe Mesa State at 7:00 p.m. (Mountain). Both games will be played at Greyhound Arena on the ENMU campus.
