ENMU WOMEN’S TENNIS TEAM READY FOR REGIONAL ROLEX TOURNAMENT
PORTALES, NM — The Eastern New Mexico University women’s tennis team, which finished the 1998-99 season ranked #19 in NCAA Division II, competes at one of the fall season’s most prestigious tournaments, the Regional Rolex.
This year’s Rolex is Oct. 1-3 in Greeley, Colo., and will be hosted by the University of Northern Colorado.

ENMU’s Layla Turner (So., Casa Grande, AZ/Casa Grande Union H.S.) was ranked 24th in NCAA Division II last year in singles. She reached the quarterfinals of the singles bracket at the 1998 Regional Rolex, which was hosted by Washburn University in Topeka, Kan.

Senior Julie Stiles (Roswell, NM/Goddard H.S.) will also provide a strong challenge in the singles bracket. The Regional Rolex features one open bracket in singles and one open bracket in doubles.

Turner and Stiles will also be top challengers in doubles. They took first place in the #1 Doubles flight at the Abilene Christian Tournament, Sept. 17-18. Stiles and Turner were ranked #27 in NCAA Division II last season. Other singles entries for ENMU at the 1999 Regional Rolex will be Lisa Weinman, Sarah Pennington, Amanda Wells, and Sarah Salazar.

In addition to Stiles and Turner, Eastern will enter Weinman and Salazar, and Pennington and Wells, in the doubles flight. Last year, Pennington and former tennis player Dena Boans (Class of ‘99) reached the quarterfinals of the Regional Rolex.

ENMU is coached by Christine Blaeser, who is in her 10th season with the Zias. Eastern finsished the 1998-99 season with a 20-9 overall record.
