ENMU SPLITS PAIR OF MATCHES AT TEXAS WOMAN’S INVITATIONAL
DENTON, TX — The Eastern New Mexico University volleyball team split a pair of matches on Fri., Oct. 8, during the opening day of the Texas Woman’s University Invitational in Denton, Texas. The Zias fell to Texas A&M-Commerce, 8-15, 15-8, 15-10, 12-15, 16-14 , in their first match, then defeated Incarnate Word, 15-4, 15-10, 15-8 in their second match. The Zias, now 15-5 on the season, close out the tournament on Sat., Oct. 9 with matches against St. Edwards (1 p.m. CDT) and Texas Woman’s (5:00 p.m. CDT).

Against TAMU-Commerce, the Zias took an early lead with a 15-8 victory in the opening game. The Lions, however, claimed victories in the next three games to win the match, 3-1. TAMUC recorded 13 service aces during the match, while ENMU had 6 ball handling errors and 6 blocking errors.

Missy Raitz of TAMU-Commerce led all players with 22 kills. Sara Wedberg earned 16 kills and a match-high 24 digs for the Lions who improved to 6-13. Setter Lauren Kitchens provided 53 assists and 16 digs.

ENMU was led by senior right side hitter Heather DesMarais (Yakima, WA/Columbia Basin College), who earned 17 kills and 3 total blocks. Outside hitter Tanya Heyko (Salem, OR/Chemeketa C.C.) contributed 16 kills, 15 digs and 2 service aces, while senior outside hitter Irma Cobos (Kermit, TX/Kermit H.S.) added 11 kills and 17 digs.

Senior setter Lindsey Davison (Kelso, WA/Columbia Basin College) provided 48 assists. Davison moved past Barbara Lynn (1983-86; 2,165 assists) and into second place on ENMU’s all-time assist chart during the TAMUC match. Including 24 assists in the Zias’ quick victory over Incarnate Word, Davison increased her total to 2,224. She trails only Stacey Estlund (1996-97), who earned 2,393 career assists at ENMU.

In the match against Incarnate Word, DesMarais led the Zias with 10 kills and a .474 hitting percentage. Heyko and junior outside hitter Annette Luafalemana-Tanielu (Kaunakakai, HI/Eastern Arizona College) each recorded 9 digs for the Zias.
