ENMU EARNS 3-1 RECORD AT ADAMS STATE FALL BRAWL
ALAMOSA, CO — Eastern New Mexico’s volleyball team won three out of four matches Sept. 3-4 at the Adams State College Fall Brawl. The Zias tied for the second best record in the tournament and improved to 6-2 on the season.

ENMU defeated Central Oklahoma, 13-15, 15-12, 15-6, 15-2, and lost to Western New Mexico, 14-16, 14-16, 14-16, on Fri., Sept. 3. On Sat., Sept. 4, the Zias swept College of the Southwest, 15-7, 15-7, 15-8, and took three consecutive games from Adams State, 15-6, 15-3, 15-9.

In the opening match against Central Oklahoma, the Zias lost the first game, but rallied for the victory, edging UCO in the second game, and winning by large margins in the final two games.

The Zias hit .469 while winning the third game 15-6 and hit .545 in a 15-2 rout in the fourth game. ENMU earned a .284 attack percentage during the match, while limiting UCO to a .196 attack percentage.

Aubrey Gladstone (Jr., MB, Kennewick, WA/Columbia Basin College) led the Zias with 15 kills against the Lady Bronchos. Tanya Heyko (Jr., OH, Salem, OR/Chemeketa C.C.) added 14 kills and 7 dig, while Irma Cobos (Sr., OH, Kermit, TX/Kermit H.S.) Contributed 13 kills and 18 digs. Setter Lindsey Davison (Sr., Kelso, WA/Columbia Basin College) earned 47 assists.

Central Oklahoma was led by Alma Brahimaj, who had 19 kills and 21 digs. Against Western New Mexico, the Zias struggled on offense, recording 40 hitting errors during the three-game match.

Even so, ENMU lost all three games by just two points each. Senior right-side hitter Heather DesMarais (Yakima, WA/Columbia Basin College) avoided offensive difficulties and led the Zias with 19 kills and a .349 hitting percentage on 43 total attacks versus Western New Mexico.

DesMarais also registered 3 block solos. Cobos finished with 17 kills and Davison recorded 53 assists. The top player for WNMU was Erin Denton, who achieved 21 kills and provided 10 digs.

The Zias zoomed past College of the Southwest in Saturday’s first match, as Heyko earned 10 kills and 9 digs. She led six ENMU players with 5 or more kills in the match. Angie Diamond topped CSW with 9 kills, while Arynn Clark added 4 kills and 10 digs.

Against host Adams State, the Zias received 12 kills apiece from DesMarais and Heyko. Heyko also added a match-high 13 digs. Cobos produced 12 digs and junior outside hitter Annette Luafalemana-Tanielu (Kaunakakai, HI/Eastern Arizona College) supplied 10 digs.

The Zias limited Adams State to a .037 team hitting percentage. DesMarais was one of eight players named to the All-Tournament Team. She finished the event with 51 kills, a .374 hitting percentage, 12 total blocks, 5 digs and 10 assists. She averaged 3.9 kills per game and 0.9 blocks per game.
