EASTERN NEW MEXICO RALLIES PAST TEXAS A&M-KINGSVILLE IN FIVE GAMES
KINGSVILLE, TX — The Eastern New Mexico University volleyball team rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat host Texas A&M-Kingsville, 3-2, in the opening Lone Star Conference match for both team. ENMU won 15-7, 10-15, 15-17, 15-5, 15-7, and improved to 9-2 overall (1-0 LSC). TAMUK fell to 5-11 (0-1 LSC).

The Zias were led by senior outside hitter Irma Cobos (Kermit, TX/Kermit H.S.) and junior middle blocker Aubrey Gladstone (Kennewick, WA/Columbia Basin College), each with 15 kills. Cobos added 37 digs, while Gladstone finished the match with 24 digs and 5 block assists. ENMU excelled on offense, hitting .315 for the match.

The Zias also played solid defense, recording 3 block solos and 19 block assists. TAMUK was limited to a .163 hitting percentage.

The Lady Javelinas were successful at the net, earning 6 block solos and 20 block assists. Kingsville earned a .500 hitting percentage in the second game and a .256 hitting percentage in the third game to take a 2-1 lead after falling 15-7 in Game #1.

The Lady Javelinas earned 29 kills in the two wins, accounting for more than half of their 51 kills for the match. The Zias held TAMUK to just 6 kills in Game #4. In game #5 Kingsville had 8 kills, but committed 8 kill errors for a .000 attack percentage. ENMU hit .400 in Game #5, with 6 kills, no errors and 15 total attacks in the decisive, rally-scored game.

Maricela Santos (Sr., MB, Laredo, TX/Laredo C.C.) of ENMU led all hitters with a .647 hitting percentage. She recorded 12 kills and just 1 kill error on 17 attacks. Santos also earned 14 digs, 5 assists and 7 total blocks.

TAMUK was led by Sara Lukaszewski with 14 kills and 36 digs, and by Kenisha Reaux with 11 kills and 45 digs. Eastern New Mexico remains in Kingsville on Saturday (Sept. 18) to take on St. Mary’s University (Texas) in non-conference action. Match time is set for 10:00 a.m. (MDT).
