NELSON SMITH NAMED LSC SOUTH DIVISION DEFENSIVE PLAYER-OF-THE-WEEK
PORTALES, NM — Eastern New Mexico University junior defensive tackle Nelson Smith (6’5”, 280 lbs., Albuquerque, NM/U. of Miami (Fla.)/La Cueva H.S.) has been named Lone Star Conference South Division Defensive Player-of-the-Week.

Smith earned the award for his efforts in ENMU’s 33-13 win at Western New Mexico University on Sat., Sept. 4. Smith recorded 4 tackles and 7 assists (11 total tackles) against the Mustangs. He was involved in 6 tackles for 23 yards in losses, including 2 quarterback sacks. Smith also blocked an extra point.

Smith helped ENMU limit Western to just 43 rushing yards on 36 carries. WNMU completed only 14 of 33 passes for 162 yards. The game was the Greyhounds’ season opener.

Eastern New Mexico hosts New Mexico Highlands University this Saturday (Sept. 11) at Greyhound Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m. (MST). ENMU leads the all-time series with NMHU, 26-9, including victories in the final 20 seconds each of the past two seasons.
