ENMU TO INTERVIEW THREE CANDIDATES
HEAD MEN’S BASKETBALL COACHING POSITION

PORTALES, NM -- Rosie Stallman, athletic director at Eastern New Mexico University, has announced the selection of three finalists in the search for the university’s next head men’s basketball coach.The finalists are Charlie Schaef, Greg Young and Johnny Brown. All three candidates will be interviewed on the ENMU campus during the next week and a half.

Schaef will be the first candidate to arrive at Eastern New Mexico. His visit will begin on Wed., Apr. 5 and will continue on Thur., Apr. 6. Young will be at ENMU on Fri., Apr. 7 and Sat., Apr. 8. Brown will be interviewed on Mon., Apr. 10 and Tues., Apr. 11.

Schaef is currently the head men’s basketball coach at the University of Arkansas-Monticello. He recently completed his first year at UAM, after previously serving as assistant men’s basketball coach at West Texas A&M University for four years (1995-96 through 1998-99). While at West Texas, he helped the Buffaloes win 81 games, including back-to-back seasons of 26-5 in 1997-98 and 22-7 in 1998-99.

He has also been an assistant coach at the University of Texas-Pan American for two years (1992-93 and 1993-94) and an assistant coach and interim head coach at Labette Community College in Parsons, Kansas for one year (25-7 in 1994-95). He received a B.S. degree in Exercise and Sport Sciences from Texas Tech University in 1993 and earned an M.S. degree in Physical Education from Pittsburg State University (Kan.) in 1995. He is also a graduate of Canadian High School in Canadian, Texas.

Young is head men’s basketball coach at Hill Community College in Hillsboro, Texas. He has achieved a 38-25 overall record during two seasons at HCC. He previously was head coach for four years at Lamar Community College in Lamar, Colo. His overall record at LCC was 63-60.

Prior to becoming a head coach at the junior college level, Young was an assistant coach at ENMU from 1991-92 through 1993-94. The Greyhounds reached the NCAA Division II Round of 16 in 1992-93, after going 23-7 and winning the Lone Star Conference Tournament title.

ENMU was 54-33 overall during Young’s three years as an assistant coach. Young also has coached as an assistant at Texas Weseylan University for four years (1986-90) and at Cleburne High School at Cleburne, Texas for one year (1990-91). He earned a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from Howard Payne University in 1986. He received a master’s degree in Education from Texas Wesleyan University in 1990.

Brown is currently assistant men’s basketball coach at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, which recently completed its first season in NCAA Division I with a 13-13 record. Brown has been at TAMU-CC for two years, as the Islanders started their men’s basketball program.

Prior to arriving at TAMU-CC, Brown was an assistant coach at Fresno State University for four seasons (1994-98). He also was an assistant at Cal Poly Pomona in 1992-93. Brown played college basketball at the University of New Mexico, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Speech Communications in 1986.

He was named First Team All-Western Athletic Conference, and was a National Association of Basketball Coaches All-Star. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Clippers in 1986, but did not play in the NBA. He played professional basketball in the World Basketball League from 1988-92. He was a WBL All-Star selection in 1989 and 1991, and was named to the All-Defensive Team in 1988.

ENMU has a history of success in men’s basketball, winning the NAIA National Title in 1968-69, and finishing 15 seasons with 17 or more wins. The Greyhounds compete in the Lone Star Conference and NCAA Division II.
