TAMU-KINGSVILLE EDGES ZIAS TO FINISH SWEEP
KINGSVILLE, TX -- Texas A&M-Kingsville edged Eastern New Mexico, 2-1, in the second game Mar. 31, to sweep a double-header with the Zias in Kingsville, Texas. In the first game, the Lady Javelinas scored 8 runs in the second inning to defeat ENMU, 9-0. With the wins, TAMU-Kingsville improved to 26-10 overall and to 2-0 in the LSC South.

Eastern New Mexico dropped to 20-20 overall, including 2-4 in the LSC South. Sheila Dotson drove in both runs for TAMUK in the second game with a home run in the third inning. Tracy Guadarrama, who opened the inning with a walk, also scored on the play. The run gave the Lady Javelinas a 2-1 lead they never relinquished.

ENMU had moved in front, 1-0, in the first inning, when Rachel Mohler (So., 3B, Las Vegas, NV/Green Valley H.S.) singled and was later driven home on a single by Kim Paschall (Jr., CF, Midland, TX/Midland H.S.). Mohler led all players with 3 hits in 4 at bats during the game. One of her hits was a double in the fifth inning.

Enida Rosales (Sr., 2B, Glendale, AZ/South Mountain College) singled with two outs in the seventh inning to start ENMU’s final attempt to tie the game. Mohler followed with a single, advancing Rosales to third.TAMUK pitcher Maria Gutierrez ended the game by striking out her fourth batter of the game.

ENMU outhit TAMUK, 8-4, in the second game. In addition to Mohler’s 3 hits, the Zias received singles from Rosales, Paschall, Suzy Seitzinger (Jr., P/OF, Bloomfield, NM/ Bloomfield H.S.), Erica Sussex (Jr., C, Bloomfield, NM/Bloomfield H.S.) and Natalie Barela (Sr., INF, Tempe, AZ/Phoenix College).Dotson led TAMUK with 2 hits in 3 at bats.

In the opener, the Javelinas scored 8 runs on 6 hits in the second inning to turn a 1-0 lead into the 9-0 final score. Jennifer Moffett drove in the final two runs with a double. It was the only extra-base hit of the game. Gutierrez and Amanda Reed combined for a 2-hitter for Kingsville. Gutierrez was credited with the win after allowing 1 hit in two innings. Reed gave up 1 hit during the final three stanzas, as TAMUK won on the run rule after 4 1/2 innings.

The Zias and Lady Javelinas will play another double-header in Kingsville, Texas on Sat., Apr. 1. First pitch in the opening game is set for 11:00 a.m. (CST).
