ZIAS DEFEAT TARLETON STATE, 8-1 Layla Turner (So., Casa Grande, AZ/Casa Grande Union H.S.), ranked #6 in the nation in singles, led the way with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Sterling Parker in the #1 singles flight. Turner also won #1 doubles, as she teamed with senior Julie Stiles (Roswell, NM/Goddard H.S.) to defeat Keri Reed and Lisa Buitron, 8-5. Tarleton State’s only victory came at #6 singles, where Christi Willliams defeated Betsy Cata (So., Espanola, NM/Espanola Valley H.S.). In addition to Turner, other ENMU winners in singles play were Lisa Weinman (Fr., Albuquerque, NM/West Mesa H.S.) at #2 singles, Sarah Pennington (So., Sweetwater, TX/Sweetwater H.S.) at #3 singles, Mandy Wells (Fr., Pampa,TX/ Pampa H.S.) at #4 singles and Sarah Salazar (Fr., Albuquerque, NM/Saint Pius X H.S.). Joining Turner and Stiles with doubles victories for the Zias were Weinman and Pennington at #2 doubles and Wells and Salazar at #3 doubles. Weinman and Pennington shut out Corey Seward and Melissa Haley, 8-0. Wells and Salazar completed the sweep of doubles action by defeating Sterling Parker and Lauren Walker, 8-4. Eastern New Mexico is scheduled to host the University of Central Oklahoma on Sat., Apr. 1 at 2:00 p.m. (MST). Central Oklahoma defeated the Zias in the Midwest Regional final (at Edmond, Okla.) in last year’s NCAA Division II National Tournament. UCO is slated to open Saturday’s action at 9:00 a.m. (MST) against Tarleton State University at the Zia Tennis Complex. |
