DeHOYOS THROWS 5-HIT SHUTOUT OVER CAMERON
LAWTON, OK -- Eastern New Mexico University sophomore pitcher Gabe DeHoyos (RHP, Artesia, NM/Trinidad J.C.) threw a complete-game, 5-hit shutout in the first game, as the Greyhounds defeated Cameron University, 3-0, on their way to a double-header sweep, Fri., Mar. 31 in Lawton, Okla.

Eastern completed the sweep with a 6-4 victory in 9 innings in the second game. The wins moved ENMU above the .500 mark at 16-15-1 for the season. The Greyhounds evened their Lone Star Conference South Division record at 3-3. Cameron dropped to 12-19 overall, 1-5 in the LSC South.

DeHoyos did not allow an extra-base hit, while improving to 4-1 on the season. His team-leading earned run average dropped to 3.16 during 42 2/3 innings pitched. DeHoyos struck out 4 batters and allowed only 2 walks.

With DeHoyos providing strong pitching, the Greyhounds were able to win with just 4 hits. First baseman Jeff Thibodeaux (Sr., Apple Valley, CA/Victor Valley College) drove in ENMU’s first two runs on a fourth-inning double to left field. Chris Stewart (Jr., LF Albuquerque, NM/Manzano H.S.) and Andy Hostetler (So., CF, Albuquerque, NM/Valley H.S.) scored on the play.

The Greyhounds received an insurance run in the sixth inning. Senior designated hitter Matt Masiarek (Brisbane, Australia/Lamar C.C.) provided the run with a homer down the left field line. Masiarek leads ENMU with 7 home runs this season.No one had more than one hit in the opener. All five of Cameron’s hits versus DeHoyos were singles.

In the second game, Eastern New Mexico built a 4-0 lead, then Cameron rallied to tie the game and force extra innings. ENMU won the game by scoring two runs in the ninth inning.

Dallas McMann (Fr., RF, Amarillo, TX/Randall H.S.) scored the game’s first run in the top of the second inning. He doubled to left field, then scored later in the inning on a sacrifice fly by senior catcher Jeromy Neumann (Visalia, CA/Victor Valley College).

Third baseman Steven Romano (Las Cruces, NM/Onate H.S.) walked and scored on an error during the inning. Hostetler scored for ENMU in the third inning on a single by Thibodeaux.

The Greyhounds added another run in the top of the fourth, when Stewart walked with the bases loaded to score Neumann. The Hounds left three runners on base during the inning, and finished the game with 10 runners left on base.

Cameron put its first run on the scoreboard in the fourth inning, then tied the game in the sixth. The fourth-inning run, scored by Chris Sheldon, ended a string of 10 consecutive scoreless innings to begin the double-header.

The Aggies opened the sixth with a single, then ENMU recorded an out on a foul ball. Cameron tallied three more singles in a row, with Marty Monigold and Alex Ihler driving in one run apiece. Monigold scored the third run of the inning when Derek Armstrong grounded into the second out against reliever Rich Thomas (So., RHP, Albuquerque, NM/Trinidad J.C.).

Thomas, who pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings, forced another ground out to end the stanza. Neither team scored again, until the top of the ninth. Hostetler walked to begin the inning, then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Stewart.

Masiarek broke the tie by scoring Hostetler on a single to center field. McMann singled later in the inning, and scored from first on a single to left center by Thibodeaux.

Stewart replaced Thomas on the mound with a runner at first and no outs in the bottom of the inning. Stewart struck out the first batter he faced, then forced a game-ending double play.

Thomas improved to 2-0 with the win, while Stewart registered his first save of the year. McMann led all players with 3 hits in 5 at bats. Thibodeaux added 2 hits and 2 RBIs in 5 at bats.

Brent Bellamy, Sheldon and Monigold each recorded a pair of hits for Cameron. The Aggies’ starting pitcher, Ryan Wroblewski (2-6) went 8 2/3 innings, but suffered the loss.

Eastern New Mexico and Cameron are scheduled to play another double-header on Sat., Apr. 1. Action in the first game is set to get underway at 11:00 a.m. (MST).
