GREYHOUNDS SPILT DOUBLE-HEADER FRIDAY
PORTALES, NM -- Eastern New Mexico University scored 6 runs in the third inning and 9 runs in the fourth inning on its way to an 18-2 Lone Star Conference victory over Texas A&M-Kingsville in the first game of a double-header, Apr. 7 at Greyhound Field.TAMU- Kingsville won the second game 5-3 in 10 innings to split the twinbill.

ENMU concluded the day at 17-17-1 overall and 4-4 in the LSC South. The Javelinas ended the double-header with a 17-29 overall record, including 5-5 in the LSC South. The Greyhounds led 1-0 in the opener until exploding for 15 runs in the back-to-back big innings.

David Jones (Jr., SS, Sierra Vista, AZ/Eastern Arizona College) led off the ENMU first inning with a triple to right field, then scored when Chris Stewart (Jr., LF, Albuquerque, NM/Manzano H.S.) hit a grounder for the second out.

ENMU took control of the game in the third stanza. Jones, who finished the opener with 5 hits in 5 at bats, drove in the first two runs of the inning on a double to right field.

Jones scored on a single by Andy Hostetler (So., CF, Albuquerque, NM/Valley H.S.), and Hostetler scored on a double by designated hitter Matt Masiarek (Sr., Brisbane, Australia/Lamar C.C.).

Dallas McMann (Fr., RF, Amarillo, TX/Randall H.S.) brought in Masiarek with a triple, and later scored on a ground out by Jeff Thibodeaux (Sr., 1B, Apple Valley, CA/Victor Valley College).

The Hounds increased their lead to 16-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning. Masiarek, who went 2 for 4 in the game, hit a two-run homer during the inning. It was his team-leading eighth home run of the season.

Overall, the Greyhounds amassed 8 hits in the inning, including an RBI-double by Stewart and RBI-singles by Thibodeaux, Jones, Hostetler, and Eddie Jimenez (Jr., 2B, Tucumcari, NM/N.M. Military Institute). Eastern also added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.TAMUK remained scoreless until the seventh inning, when the Javelinas plated two unearned runs.

Gabe DeHoyos (So., RHP, Artesia, NM/Trinidad J.C.) pitched 5 shutout innings to improve to 5-1 for ENMU. He walked 7 batters, but recorded 3 strikeouts and allowed just 3 hits, all singles.Rich Thomas (So., P, Albuquerque, NM/Trinidad J.C.) gave up just one hit in two innings of relief.

Jones almost completed the cycle for the Greyhounds. He hit a triple, two doubles and two singles, while scoring 5 times and producing 3 RBIs.

Masiarek scored twice and drove in 3 runs, while McMann went 2 for 3 with a double, a triple and 2 runs scored.

In the second game, TAMUK starter Mike Adams (6-5) threw a complete-game 4-hitter. He threw 135 pitches in the 10-inning contest, while striking out 14 batters and allowing just 2 walks.

ENMU scored the game’s first run in the third inning. Jeromy Neumann (Sr., C, Visalia, CA/ Victor Valley College) walked, advanced to second on a sacrifice by Jimenez and scored on an error.

The Javelinas moved in front in the top of the fourth on a 2-run homer by Lee Autry. Wes Whitsell, who reached on a fielder’s choice, also scored on the play. Autry, who leads TAMU with 5 home runs this season, finished the game with 3 hits in 4 at bats.

Eastern regained the lead with 2 runs in its next at bat. Thibodeaux drove in both runs with a single to center field. Stewart and Masiarek scored on the play.

TAMUK’s Adrian Rosales tripled in the sixth inning, and later scored to tie the game, 3-3. He came home on a single to left field by Whitsell. Neither team scored again until the Javelinas plated two runs in the top of the 10th.

Ed Rivera opened the stanza for TAMUK with a shallow fly ball near the right field line. McMann almost made a sliding catch, but the ball slipped past him for a triple. Rivera scored on an error when the throw to the infield was wild. Gabe Jones followed with a walk, and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly to deep center field by Rosales.

ENMU sent just 3 batters to the plate in the bottom of the inning, as the Javelinas earned the win. Greyhound starter Jerry Macias (Fr., RHP, Las Cruces, NM/Las Cruces H.S.) did not receive a decision. He struck out 5 batters and did not give up a walk in 7 innings on the mound. Reliever Cory Barker (Jr., RHP, Kelseyville, CA/Mendicino J.C.) fell to 2-3 with the loss.

The Greyhounds and the Javelinas will play two more games tomorrow (Sat., Apr. 8) at Greyhound Field. First pitch in the opening game is set for 12:00 noon (MDT).
