GREYHOUNDS SWEEP JAVELINAS SATURDAY
STEWART, KING PITCH COMPLETE GAMES

PORTALES, NM -- Junior pitchers Chris Stewart (LHP, Albuquerque, NM/Manzano H.S.) and Tim King (RHP, Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad H.S.) both earned complete-game victories to lead Eastern New Mexico University to a double-header sweep of visiting Texas A&M University- Kingsville, Sat., Apr. 8 at Greyhound Field.

Stewart allowed just 4 hits to win the opener, 4-1, while King limited the Javelinas to 6 hits, as ENMU won the second game, 5-1. ENMU improved to 19-17-1 overall and to 6-4 in the Lone Star Conference South Division. TAMUK dropped to 17-31 on the season, including 5-7 in the LSC South.

Stewart allowed just 4 singles in the opener, as he evened his record at 4-4. The Javelinas trailed 4-0 after one inning, and did not score until their final at bat in the top of the seventh. The Greyhounds finished the game with just 5 hits, but achieved 4 in the first inning.

Junior shortstop David Jones (Sierra Vista, AZ/Eastern Arizona) tripled to center field to start the inning. Joe Clabaugh (Sr., OF, Mustang, OK/Western Oklahoma) drove in Jones with a sacrifice fly to right.

Andy Hostetler singled, then stole second and third. Matt Masiarek (Sr., DH, Brisbane, Australia/Lamar C.C.) walked, and right fielder Dallas McMann (Fr., Amarillo, TX/Randall H.S.) hit an RBI-single.

Masiarek scored on a sacrifice fly by Jeff Thibodeaux (Sr., 1B, Apple Valley, CA/ Victor Valley College), and McMann scored on a single by Steven Romano (Fr., 3B, Las Cruces, NM/Onate H.S.).

Neither team scored again until TAMUK plated its only run in the seventh inning. The Javelinas loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh on the strength of two walks and a single by pinch hitter Armando Huerta.

Lee Autry scored when Hector DeLeon hit into a double play, but the rally ended on a ground out by Denzil Davis. Romano was the only ENMU player with more than one hit, as he recorded two singles in three at bats. Adrian Rosales was 2 for 3 for TAMU-Kingsville.

Jones’ leadoff triple in the first inning was the only extra-base hit by either team. Kingsville took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the second game, as Huerta doubled, then scored on a single by Rosales.

ENMU tied the game in the bottom of the fourth, when Thibodeaux walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a single by catcher Matt Brown (Jr., Napa, CA/Diablo Valley C.C.).

The Greyhounds moved in front with 3 runs in the fifth inning. Jones opened the inning by reaching first on an infield error. Hostetler hit a sacrifice bunt, advancing Jones to second. Jones later stole third base, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Masiarek.

McMann and Romano each drove in a run with a single during the inning. In the sixth, ENMU tallied the game’s final run. Hostetler singled with two outs, stole second base, and scored on a single by Stewart.Stewart, who played in left field in the second game, was 1 for 2 with 2 walks.

TAMUK began the seventh by hitting into a line out and a ground out. The Javelinas then earned two baserunners. B.J. Griffith singled to center field and Ed Rivera hit a hard grounder that took a bad hop, hit Romano in the face at third, and bounced into foul territory for a double.

King, who struck out 5 batters and gave up just 2 walks, forced Huerta to fly out to end the game. King evened his record at 2-2 with the win. Hostetler was 2 for 3 for ENMU, while Rosales went 2 for 3 for TAMUK.

Starting pitcher Lavelle Morgan of TAMUK threw into the seventh inning, but received the loss to fall to 0-5 on the season.

Eastern New Mexico remains at home for a double-header against Wayland Baptist University on Tue., Apr. 11. First pitch for the opener is set for 4:00 p.m. at Greyhound Field.
