ZIAS ROUT WESTERN NEW MEXICO, 9-0
PORTALES, NM -- Eastern New Mexico University, ranked #14 in NCAA Division II, routed cross-state rival Western New Mexico University, 9-0, Apr. 7 at the Zia Tennis Complex.

ENMU easily won all three doubles flights and did not lose a set during singles play. The Zias improved their overall record to 6-3 on the season.

ENMU’s #2 singles player, Julie Stiles (Sr., Roswell, NM/Goddard H.S.), played both singles and doubles for the first time this spring. Stiles, who has been recovering from a knee injury, did not play at all against several opponents, and was limited to doubles action in Eastern’s other matches. In the fall, she placed 6th in doubles at the ITA/Rolex National Tournament.

Stiles and doubles partner Layla Turner (So., Casa Grande, AZ/Casa Grande Union H.S.) defeated Roberta Sanchez and Jana Folstad of WNMU, 8-1, at #1 doubles. Stiles also won #2 singles, defeating Folstad, 6-1, 6-0.

Turner was victorious at #1 singles, taking a 6-0, 6-2 win over Melanie Martinez. Lisa Weinman (Fr., Albuquerque, NM/West Mesa H.S.) won #3 singles, 6-4, 6-4, over Rosie Gomez, and Sarah Pennington (So., Sweetwater, TX/Sweetwater H.S.) downed Sanchez, 6-0, 6-3, at #4 singles.

Weinman and Pennington defeated Gomez and Katherine Heck, 8-2, at #2 doubles. Eastern’s sweep also included singles wins by Mandy Wells (Fr., Pampa, TX/Pampa H.S) and Sarah Salazar (Fr., Albuquerque, NM/Saint Pius X H.S.).

Wells defeated Heck, 6-0, 6-2, at #5 singles, and Salazar downed Kristen Sloboden, 6-3, 6-0, at #6 singles. Wells and Salazar also won #3 doubles, defeating Martinez and Sloboden, 8-3.

ENMU remains at home on Sat., Apr. 8 to take on Cameron University in a Lone Star Conference match at 2:00 p.m. (MDT). Cameron will also play WNMU on Saturday, with match time set for 9:00 a.m. (MDT) at the Zia Tennis Complex.
