ZIAS SWEEP TEXAS-PERMIAN BASIN
WITH PAIR OF SHUTOUTS
Harrer Throws No-Hitter in 1st Game

PORTALES, NM — The Eastern New Mexico University softball team recorded a pair of shutouts in a double-header sweep of the University of Texas - Permian Basin, Apr. 11 at the Zia Softball Field. ENMU won both games 8-0 on the run rule in five innings. The victories improved the Zias to 26-24 overall. UTPB fell to 4-16 on the season.

Junior pitcher Jennifer Harrer (Albuquerque, NM/Hope Christian H.S.) threw a no-hitter in the first game. She allowed no walks, but two UTPB runners reach on infield errors. Harrer, who struck out 8 batters during the game, improved to 10-8 overall. The Zias scored 6 runs in the second inning of the opener.

Right fielder Kristy Jones (Fr., Artesia, NM/New Mexico State) walked with the bases loaded to force in the first run. Left fielder Nicole Archibeque (Fr., Albuquerque, NM/Valley H.S.) drove in the next two runs with a single. Kim Paschall (Jr., CF, Midland, TX/Midland H.S.) hit a sacrifice fly, Sarah Rempp (Jr., SS, Greeley, CO/Central H.S.) hit an RBI-single and Enida Rosales (Sr., 2B, Glendale, AZ/South Mountain College) drove in a run with a fielder’s choice.

ENMU added one run in the third inning and another in the fourth. Jones doubled, stole third, and scored on a single by Rachel Mohler (So., 3B, Las Vegas, NV/Green Valley H.S.) in the third. Rosales doubled and later scored in the fourth. ENMU finished the game with 8 hits — one each by eight different players.

The Zias were 8 of 19 overall (.421), with 8 walks and no strikeouts. In the second game, senior pitcher Adrienne Conner allowed just 4 hits while recording another shutout win. Conner (8-12) recorded 4 strikeouts and gave up 1 walk.

ENMU took an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Rosales hit a double to left field, then scored when Mohler reached first base on an error. Mohler advanced to second on a single, reached third on a fly ball, and scored on a ground out by Natalie Barela (Sr., IF, Tempe, AZ/Phoenix College).

Paschall competed the scoring when she crossed the plate on an infield single by Dawn Hunt (Fr., DH/1B, Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad H.S.). In the third inning, ENMU increased its lead to 5-0 with a pair of runs.

Paschall, who began the inning with a bunt single, eventually stole home for the inning’s first run. Katie Call (Sr., RF, Albuquerque, NM/Cibola H.S.) hit an infield single to short to score the other run. Eastern closed out the scoring with 3 runs in the sixth inning. Each run was scored when an ENMU player hit into a fielder’s choice.

Michelle Delillo (So., OF, Albuquerque, NM/ Cibola H.S.) scored the first run, Rosales scored the second run and Paschall tallied the third run. Delillo opened the inning with a bunt single. Paschall led all players with 2 hits in three at bats. She scored 3 times, and also earned one RBI. Rosales was 1 for 1 with 2 walks and 2 runs, while Delillo was 1 for 2 with a run scored. Hunt went 1 for 3 with 2 RBIs.

Four UTPB players each earned one hit. They were Kristin Equiniones, Stephanie Stone, Cheri Glasscock and Kacey Huckabee. Elizabeth Stanley suffered the loss in the second game, while Stephanie Dunaway was the loser in the first game.

The Zias host Texas Woman’s University in a four-game Lone Star Conference series this weekend. Game dates and times have been changed to Sat., Apr. 15 at 1:00 p.m. (MDT) and Sun., Apr. 16 at 12:00 noon (MDT).
