ENMU FOOTBALL TEAM TO PLAY
GREEN-SILVER GAME SATURDAY MORNING

PORTALES, NM — The Eastern New Mexico University football team will bring an exciting finish to its 2000 spring practice season Saturday morning (Apr. 15) with the annual Green vs. Silver game. Action gets underway at Greyhound Stadium at 10:00 a.m. (MDT).

Eastern’s spring game feature players who have eligibility remaining. Several players will miss the game due to injuries. ENMU’s players have been split into two teams: Green and Silver. Team assignments were determined in a draft by players unable to compete.

The Green team was drafted by defensive tackle Nelson Smith, wide receiver Brian Weimer and center Nate Mastin. The Silver team was drafted by defensive end James Stewart, offensive guard Rowdy Clark and tight end Jarrod Fisher.

Key players on the White team include quarterback James Williams, currently #1 on the depth chart, plus offensive stars Antoine Lacy and Taryll Boxton at running back, J. Jensen at center, Deryck Miller at guard. Top defensive linemen for the White team will be Michael Connelly from Portales and transfer Jeremiah Johnson from Clovis.

Other key defensive players will be Larry Varnado, Jimmy Hamilton and Kane Sweet at linebacker, and Justin Hibbler at cornerback. The Green team offense will be led by quarterbacks Mike MacCallum and Heath Ridenour.

Other important offensive players for the Green will be running back Dennis Beard, tight end Josh Lynn, wide receiver Cale Sanders and guard Billy Biggar. The Green squad also features defensive tackle John Williams, linebacker Garett Williams and defensive backs Tonmar Johnson, Quincy Scott, and Michael Garvin.

An interesting aspect of the game is that brothers James Williams (QB) and John Williams (DT) will be on the field at the same time — on opposite teams.

The Green vs. Silver game will also be the kicking debut of transfer Mike Trimble from Adams State and redshirt freshman Steven Todd from Lubbock, Texas.

The Green vs. Silver Game will have four 12-minute quarters. Kickoffs will be controlled and punts will not be returned. Extra points and field goals will be kicked under normal rules.

Admission is FREE and the public is welcome to attend. Greyhound Stadium is located on Highway 70 between Portales and Clovis.

Last fall, ENMU earned an 8-3 overall record for the second consecutive season. The Greyhounds tied for the Lone Star Conference South Division title at 6-3. Head Coach Harold “Bud” Elliott was named LSC South Coach-of-the-Year for the second time in as many years.
