14TH-RANKED ZIAS DEFEAT CENTRAL OKLAHOMA
EDMOND, OK — Eastern New Mexico, ranked #14 in NCAA Division II, defeated host Central Oklahoma, 5-0, on the opening day of the Broncho Invitational, Apr. 13 in Edmond, OK. ENMU improved to 8-3 overall and 7-1 against Lone Star Conference opponents.

Last year, Central Oklahoma defeated ENMU, 5-0, in the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional championship match, hosted by UCO. The Lady Bronchos also downed the Zias 5-1 at the Broncho Invitational and 5-1 at the LSC tournament.

This year, the Zias have had the stronger season. In today’s (Apr. 13) match, the Lady Bronchos were short one player due to injury and had to forfeit #3 doubles and #6 singles.

ENMU won both contested doubles matches. Layla Turner (So., Casa Grande, AZ/Casa Grande Union H.S.) and Julie Stiles (Sr., Roswell, NM/Goddard H.S.) won #1 doubles, 8-4, over Marina Erchova and Abby Frick. Lisa Weinman (Fr., Albuquerque, NM/West Mesa H.S.) and Sarah Pennington (So., Sweetwater, TX/Sweetwater H.S.) won #2 doubles by defeating Angie Woodard and Jill Woodard, 8-4. Pennington also won #4 singles, taking a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Angie Woodard.

All remaining singles matches were stopped after ENMU clinched the team victory. The Zias will complete pool play on Friday (Apr. 14), when they take on St. Cloud State (Minn.) at 8:00 a.m. (MDT) and battle Missouri Southern at 1:00 p.m. (MDT). The winner of Eastern’s pool will compete against three champions from other pools on Saturday (Apr. 15) to determine the overall champion.
