ZIAS COMPLETE POOL PLAY UNDEFEATED
AT UCO BRONCHO INVITATIONAL

EDMOND, OK — The Eastern New Mexico women’s tennis team, ranked #18 in the most recent NCAA Division II Poll, defeated St. Cloud State (Minn.), 5-1, and Missouri Southern, 5-1, on the second day of pool play at the Broncho Invitational, in Edmond, Okla.

The Zias, who defeated host Central Oklahoma, 5-0, on Thursday (Apr. 13), concluded pool play with a 3-0 record. ENMU improved to 10-3 overall. The Zias now enter the tournament’s championship bracket, which features the winners of all 4 pools. ENMU will play Millersville (Pa.) in the semifinals.

Against St. Cloud State, the Zias took an early 2-1 lead by winning #1 and #2 doubles. Layla Turner (So., Casa Grande, AZ/Casa Grande Union H.S.) and Julie Stiles (Sr., Roswell, NM/ Goddard H.S.) defeated Angie McMahon and Michelle Lechner, 8-3, in the #1 doubles match.

Lisa Weinman (Fr., Albuquerque, NM/West Mesa H.S.) and Sarah Pennington (So., Sweetwater, TX/Sweetwater H.S.) defeated Brianna Rupp and Maria Ritchie, 8-2, at #2 doubles. ENMU clinched the match by winning three singles flights without losing a game. Turner won #1 singles, 6-0, 6-0, over McMahon. Weinman was victorious by a similar score against Ritchie at #3 singles, and Mandy Wells (Fr., Pampa, TX/Pampa H.S.) won #5 singles by shutting out Katie Miller.

The Zias also won two doubles flights against Missouri Southern, but the #1 doubles match was not decided until a tie-breaker. Turner and Stiles edged Julie Posch and Mendy McMunn, 9-8, after taking the tie-breaker, 7-3. Weinman and Pennington were also victorious, as they defeated Jami King and Sunny Bailey, 8-2. Missouri Southern’s team of Kerri Murphy and Misty Chastain slipped past Wells and Sarah Salazar (Fr., Albuquerque, NM/St. Pius X H.S.), 9-7.

Eastern expanded its lead and won the match by defeating the Lions in three singles flights. Turner easily defeated Posch, 6-1, 6-2, at #1 singles. Pennington downed Bailey, 6-1, 6-1, at #4 singles. Salazar won, 6-1, 6-3 over Erin Campbell at #6 singles.
