ZIAS DEFEAT MILLERSVILLE UNIVERSITY IN UCO BRONCHO INVITATIONAL SEMIFINALS
EDMOND, OK — The women’s tennis team at Eastern New Mexico University, currently ranked #18 in NCAA Division II, downed Millersville University (Pa.), 5-3, in the semifinals of the University of Central Oklahoma Broncho Invitational, Apr. 15, in Edmond, Okla.

ENMU, now 11-3 on the season, will take on Ferris State University (Mich.) in the title match later today. Millersville, 18-3 overall, will play Midwestern State for third place.

ENMU rallied to claim victory over Millersville. The Zias trailed the Marauders 2-1 after the doubles matches, but won four flights in singles play to advance to the finals. Sarah Pennington (So., Sweetwater, TX/Sweetwater H.S.) won a key match at #4 singles, edging Abbey Neff, 6-1, 0-6, 6-1, in the day’s only three-set match.

Layla Turner (So., Casa Grande, AZ/Casa Grande Union H.S.) easily won #1 singles, as she downed Lauren Witmer, 6-1, 6-1. Julie Stiles (Sr., Roswell, NM/Goddard H.S.) was victorious at #2 singles, taking a 7-6, 6-1 win over Pam Kaylor.

At #3 singles, Lisa Weinman (Fr., Albuquerque, NM/West Mesa H.S.) of ENMU defeated Hillary Cornelius, 6-1, 6-3. MU’s only singles victory was earned by Abbie Sweitzer at #5 singles, as she defeated Mandy Wells (Fr., Pampa, TX/Pampa H.S.), 6-3, 6-2.

After ENMU clinched the overall team victory, the #6 singles match was canceled. Millersville achieved its 2-1 lead by winning #2 and #3 doubles. Witmer and Neff earned an 8-4 victory over Weinman and Pennington at #2 doubles, while Sweitzer and Kristina Eger won #3 doubles 8-2 over Wells and Sarah Salazar (Fr., Albuquerque, NM/St. Pius X H.S.). Turner and Stiles won #1 singles for ENMU, defeating Kaylor and Cornelius, 8-3.
