ENMU WINS BRONCHO INVITATIONAL TITLE The Zias, ranked #18 in NCAA Division II, improved to 12-3 on the season. Ferris State, ranked #13 in NCAA Division II, fell to 24-2 overall. FSU’s only previous loss was a 7-1 defeat against NCAA Division I opponent Western Michigan, Mar. 17. ENMU won all three doubles flights to take control of the match. Layla Turner (So., Casa Grande, AZ/Casa Grande Union H.S.) and Julie Stiles (Sr., Roswell, NM/Goddard H.S.) led the way by defeating Jennifer Garvey and Sharrie Kindig at #1 doubles, 8-2. Lisa Weinman (Fr., Albuquerque, NM/West Mesa H.S.) teamed with Sarah Pennington (So., Sweetwater, TX/Sweetwater H.S.) to edge Ellen Frost and Suzanne Batten, 9-7, at #2 doubles. Mandy Wells (Fr., Pampa, TX/Pampa H.S.) and Sarah Salazar (Fr., Albuquerque, NM/St. Pius X H.S.) downed Amy Tylutki and Erin Crandall at #3 doubles, 8-3. Following the doubles sweep, the Zias needed just two singles victories to win the match. Turner won a three-set battle with Garvey at #1 singles, 0-6, 7-5, 6-0, and Weinman won #3 singles in straight sets, 7-6 (7-1), 6-0, over Frost. The Bulldogs claimed their only win at #2 singles, as Kindig outlasted Stiles, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4. Eastern New Mexico does not play again until April 27-28 at the Lone Star Conference Tennis Championships in Wichita Falls, Texas. NCAA National Tournament berths and Regional pairings will be announced on Wed., Apr. 26. ENMU is seeking its fourth straight NCAA National Tournament berth. |
