DEHOYOS THROWS 1-HITTER AT ABILENE
PORTALES, NM — Eastern New Mexico University sophomore pitcher Gabe DeHoyos (RHP, Artesia, NM/Trinidad J.C.) threw a one-hitter in the opening game of ENMU’s double-header against Abilene Christian University on Friday, Apr. 21, sending the Greyhounds to a 3-1 win.

In the second game, ACU starter Brad Seydo tossed a no-hitter, as the Wildcats won, 9-0. The split, coupled with two Tarleton State University losses to Cameron University, moved the Greyhounds percentage points into first place in the Lone Star Conference South Division.

Heading into the final day of the LSC schedule on Saturday (Apr. 22), the Greyhounds are 10-6 (.625) and Tarleton State is 11-7 (.611). Abilene Christian and Texas A&M-Kingsville (which split a double-header with West Texas A&M) are both 10-8 (.556). ENMU concluded the day at 25-19-1 overall.

ACU finished the double-header with a 35-13-1 overall record. The Greyhounds will clinch an LSC Tournament berth (2 teams in each division qualify) if they win at least one game against Abilene Christian on Saturday.

ENMU can clinch the LSC South title by sweeping the double-header. ENMU can still qualify for the LSC Tournament without a win, and could win the division even if the Hounds split, but those possibilities require help from other teams. In the opener, DeHoyos struck out 5 batters and allowed 4 walks.

The only hit for ACU was supplied by Ryan Williams to lead off the fifth inning. He sent a hard shot back toward the mound. The ball went off DeHoyos’ glove and foot as the same time, then slid between first and second on the infield grass.

The Greyhounds took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Matt Masiarek (Sr., DH, Brisbane, Australia/Lamar C.C.) got on base when a ground ball was misplayed by the third baseman, then thrown wildly to first. Masiarek advanced to second, where the Wildcats tried to throw him out. The ball went into the outfield, and Masiarek ran to third. Dallas McMann (Fr., Amarillo, TX/Randall H.S.) followed with a sacrifice fly to right field, allowing Masiarek to score.

Later, Jeff Thibodeaux (Sr., 1B, Apple Valley, CA/Victor Valley College) singled and eventually scored on a base hit by Jeff Zipser (Jr., 2B, Las Vegas, NV/Victor Valley). ENMU added another run in the fourth inning. David Jones (Jr., SS, Sierra Vista, CA/ Eastern Arizona College) singled to center with two outs. Jones stole second base, then scored when Andy Hostetler (So., CF, Albuquerque, NM/Valley H.S.) hit another single to center.

The Greyhounds loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fifth, but were unable to score. ACU pitcher Jarrod Cross struck out three batters to get out of the jam. Abilene Christian had the tying runs on base following a pair of two-out walks in the seventh. DeHoyos ended the threat with his fifth strikeout of the game. Thibodeaux finished the game 2 for 2 with a walk and a run scored. He was the only player with more than one hit.

In the second game, ACU took charge with 6 runs in the third stanza. Five of the runs were unearned following a two-out error. The inning featured RBI doubles by Reggie Kennedy and Williams, plus a 2-RBI single by Phil Gentry. ACU increased its lead with one run in the fifth inning and two runs in the sixth.

ENMU received its first base runner with two outs in the 5th, when Thibodeaux walked. The inning continued when Steven Romano (Fr., 3B, Las Cruces, NM/Onate H.S.) was hit by a pitch, but a ground out supplied the third out. Zipser walked to open the sixth, but was unable to score.

Following two strikeouts in the bottom of the seventh, McMann almost broke up the no-hitter, sending a fly ball down the third base line into left field. The ENMU bench cheered as the ball landed, but the play was ruled foul. Seyda eventually ended the game by striking out McMann. Seyda finished with 8 strikeouts, while giving up just 2 walks. He upped his record to 2-1 for the season.

ENMU starter Jerry Macias fell to 4-4 with the loss. Williams was the top hitter for ACU. He recorded 3 hits in 4 at bats, to go with 2 runs and an RBI. Gentry and Chris Stephens each provided 2 hits and 2 RBIs in four at bats. They also scored one run apiece.

The Greyhounds and the Wildcats are scheduled to begin Saturday’s double-header (Apr. 22) at 12:00 noon (MDT). Chris Stewart (Jr., LHP, Albuquerque, NM/Manzano H.S.) and Tim King (Jr., RHP, Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad H.S.) are slated to start for ENMU.
