SCANLAN NAMED HEAD MEN’S BASKETBALL COACH
FOR EASTERN NEW MEXICO UNIVERSITY

PORTALES, NM — Shawn Scanlan, head men’s basketball coach at South Plains College in Levelland, Texas, the past five seasons, has been named head men’s basketball coach at Eastern New Mexico University, Rosie Stallman, ENMU Director of Athletics, has announced Scanlan is the 10th head coach since ENMU’s first season in 1934-35. He will begin his new duties immediately.

Scanlan, 44, earned an overall record of 97-57 (.630) in five years at South Plains. He coached the Texans to Western Junior College Athletic Conference (WJCAC) titles in 1995-96 and 1996-97 and to runner-up finishes in the WJCAC in 1997-98 and 1998-99. South Plains qualified for the NJCAA Regional Tournament during each of Scanlan’s first four seasons.

“I think there are three things that we need immediately in this program that Shawn provides,” Stallman said. “Number one is recruiting experience; Number two is familiarity with this area (Eastern New Mexico and West Texas); Number three is experience in turning programs around."

“His experience, his knowledge of the area and his ability to know how to succeed are vital to us getting back on the right track in the Lone Star Conference,” Stallman added.

Prior to arriving at South Plains, Scanlan was the head coach at Kilgore College in Kilgore, Texas, for five seasons (1990-95). Kilgore, a junior college competing in the Texas Eastern Athletic Conference, achieved a combined record of 101-56 (.643) under Scanlan’s guidance. He coached the team to the NJCAA National Tournament in 1994. He also led the Rangers to the NJCAA Region XIV title in 1994 and to the TEAC championship in 1991.

Overall, Kilgore earned five consecutive postseason tournament berths. While coaching at Kilgore, Scanlan was named TEAC Coach-of-theYear in 1991. He was chosen NJCAA Region XIV Coach-of-the-Year in 1994. Scanlan’s first collegiate head coaching position was at Paris Junior College in Paris, Texas.

During four seasons, he led PJC to a 70-47 (.598) overall record, while guiding the team to three postseason berths. His overall career coaching record at the junior college level is 268-160 (.626) during 14 seasons. Scanlan’s teams have qualified for postseason play 12 times and have won three conference championships.

He received a Bachelor of Science in Education degree from the University of Kansas in Dec., 1978. He earned a Master of Science degree in Physical Education and Administration at Baylor University in May, 1982.

While at Baylor, he was an assistant basketball coach for two seasons (1980-82). Scanlan has also been a high school coach. He was head basketball coach at Burleson High School in Burleson, Texas, from 1982-86.

His coaching career began as head basketball coach at Ransom High School in Ransom, Kansas, in 1979-80. Scanlan has also worked as a scout for the San Antonio Spurs (1990-92).
