ZIAS DEFEAT HARDING IN LSC QUARTERFINALS
ENMU to Meet Midwestern State in Semis

WICHITA FALLS, TX — Eastern New Mexico University, ranked #18 in NCAA Division II, defeated Harding University, 5-0, in a quarterfinal match at the Lone Star Conference Tennis Championships in Wichita Falls, Texas, Apr. 27.

The Zias, now 13-3 on the season, the will play tournament host Midwestern State University in the semifinals. ENMU, seeded #2 for the LSC Championships, and Midwestern State, seeded #3, will meet at 8:00 a.m. (MDT) on Friday, Apr. 28.

The other semifinal, also scheduled for 8:00 a.m. on Friday, will feature Abilene Christian University, the #1 seed, against Northeastern State University, seeded #4. The semifinal winners will meet for the LSC championship on Friday at 1:00 p.m. (MDT). The third place match, played between the semifinal losers, is also scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.

In ENMU’s victory over Harding, the Zias built a 3-0 lead by sweeping the doubles flights. Layla Turner (So., Casa Grande, AZ/Casa Grande Union H.S.) and Julie Stiles (Sr., Roswell, NM/ Goddard H.S.), ranked #12 nationally in doubles, defeated Carolina Banuelos and Eva Axelsson, 8-5, in the #1 flight.

Lisa Weinman (Fr., Albuquerque, NM/West Mesa H.S.) and Sarah Pennington (So., Sweetwater, TX/Sweetwater H.S.) won #2 doubles, 8-4, over Laura Tollett and Michelle Shimpock. At #3 doubles, Mandy Wells (Fr., Pampa, TX/Pampa H.S.) and Sarah Salazar (Fr., Albuquerque, NM/St. Pius X H.S.) defeated Louisa Duke and Beth Bonbrisco, 8-3.

The Zias needed just two singles victories to win the match. Weinman provided one victory by defeating Tollett, 6-3, 6-2, at #3 singles. Pennington added the other win in a 6-0, 6-0 rout of Shimpock at #4 singles. The other four singles flights were not completed after ENMU clinched the overall victory.
