EDWARDS STARTS GAME HOT, DEFEATS ENMU, 97-73 Rudy Charles Scores 19
For Greyhounds With the win, St. Edwards improved to 5-1 on the season. The Hilltoppers’ only loss was a 77-62 defeat on the home court of NCAA Division I opponent Southwest Texas State University. ENMU fell to 1-4 with the loss. Lyman, who led all players in scoring with 34 points, tallied 11 of SEU’s first 14 points, as the Hilltoppers took a 14-4 lead. ENMU answered with a basket by Rudy Charles (Fr., G, Las Vegas, NV/Durango H.S.) and a dunk from Brenton Robinson (Jr., F/C, Tucson, AZ/Central Arizona) to cut the deficit to 14-8 with 14:32 left in the first half. St. Edward’s followed with a 20-1 run that started with 17 unanswered points. Lyman scored 12 points during the run. ENMU battled back to within 19 points, 43-24, with 1:31 left in the half. The Greyhounds trailed 47-26 at the break. The Hilltoppers opened the second half with a 5-0 run to increase their lead to 52-26. Eastern outscored St. Edwards, 19-8 over the next 6:30 to cut the deficit to 15 points, 60-45, with 12:49 left. The Greyhounds pulled within 12 points, 74-62, with 5:32 remaining. The Hilltoppers outscored ENMU, 23-11, the rest of the way. Charles paced the Eastern New Mexico offense with 19 points. He scored 14 points in the second half on 6 of 10 shooting, including 2 of 4 three-point attempts. He was 8 of 13 from the floor overall. Three other ENMU players scored in double figures, led by Garland Coleman (Fr., G/F, Chicago, IL/Homewood-Flossmoor H.S.) with 13 points on 5 of 5 field goals. Coleman also grabbed 5 rebounds, earned 4 assists and recorded 2 steals. Kevin Iverson (Jr., G, Chicago, IL/Elgin C.C.) added 11 points and Robinson supplied 10 points. Lyman converted 12 of 19 field goals (7 of 11 three-pointers) in accumulating his game- high 34 points. Lachlan Teasdale contributed 13 points (6 of 6 FGs) and 11 rebounds for SEU. Darien Burton scored 10 points and hauled down 7 boards, while Ryan Flores dished out 13 assists to go with 5 points and 3 steals. ENMU concludes the tournament against the University of the Incarnate Word on Saturday, Dec. 2 at 3:00 p.m. (MST). The Greyhounds will then return to Portales to host Western New Mexico University on Thursday, Dec. 7 at 7:00 p.m. (MST). |
