TAMU-KINGSVILLE DEFEATS ZIAS, 65-53
Lady Javelinas, now 14-1 in LSC play, avenge loss at ENMU

KINGSVILLE, TX — The Lady Javelinas of Texas A&M University-Kingsville built a 15-point halftime lead and went on to defeat visiting Eastern New Mexico University, 65-53, in a Lone Star Conference South Division game, Feb. 17.

TAMUK, which lost at Eastern New Mexico, 69-66, on Jan. 22, avenged its only LSC loss and improved to 19-6 overall and 14-1 in the conference. ENMU fell to 16-8 overall and 9-5 in the LSC South.

TAMU-Kingsville led 29-17 with 1:13 left in the opening period after Brandi Bates (Jr., G/F, Plainview, TX/Plainview H.S.) hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key. The score remained the same until LaNetta Anglin sank a 3-pointer for the Javelinas as the buzzer sounded to end the half. Lorie Martinez scored just 13 seconds into the second half on a 3-pointer, as TAMUK increased its lead to 35-17.

The Zias were unable to rally into contention, but did cut the deficit to 10 points, 59-49, with 1:47 remaining. Martinez ended the rally when she connected on another 3-point shot with 1:18 left.

The Lady Javelinas gained a significant edge in turnovers. ENMU lost the ball 26 times, while TAMU-Kingsville committed just 14 turnovers. The Zias earned a 53-37 rebounding advantage, and made 15 free throws compared to 6 for TAMUK.

The Lady Javelinas, however, shot 39.1% (27 of 69) from the floor and held ENMU to just 30.5% (18 of 59). Precious Thibodeaux led Kingsville with 13 points, and Martinez added 12 points. Sheila Dotson topped the Lady Javelinas with 8 rebounds.

Bates was Eastern’s leading scorer with 16 points. She also grabbed 10 rebounds. Jody Avent (Jr., G, Stinnett, TX/South Plains College) and Katheryne Hickman (Jr., F/Post, San Antonio, TX/Castle Hills Baptist H.S.) each provided 8 points for the Zias. Hickman also contributed 9 rebounds.

The Zias, who had clinched an LSC Tournament berth prior to the game, will return to action on Thur., Feb. 24, when the host Texas A&M University-Commerce. Game time at Greyhound Arena is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. (MST).

The Zias will conclude the regular season on Sat., Feb. 26 against Texas Woman’s University at Greyhound Arena. Tipoff against the Pioneers is slated for 7:00 p.m. (MST).
