ENMU BEATS MIDWESTERN STATE 6-3
PORTALES, NM — The Eastern New Mexico women’s tennis team, ranked #18 nationally in NCAA Division II, won four of six singles flights to take a 6-3 victory over Midwestern State, Fri., Feb. 11 at the Zias Tennis Complex. The Zias upped their record to 2-0 for the 1999-2000 season.

ENMU took a 2-1 lead by winning #1 doubles and #2 doubles. The Zias then secured the team victory by winning #1, #2, #3 and #5 singles. Layla Turner (So., Casa Grande, AZ/Casa Grande Union H.S.) and doubles partner Julie Stiles (Sr., Roswell, NM/Goddard H.S.), ranked 6th nationally, held off Marci Matthews and Kristen Bixby in #1 doubles, 8-6. Lisa Weinman (Fr., Albuquerque, NM/West Mesa H.S.) and Sarah Pennington (So., Sweetwater, TX/Sweetwater H.S.) edged Brook Gray and Marsha Meyer at #2 doubles, 9-7.

Turner, also ranked 6th nationally in singles, defeated Gray, 6-3, 6-1, at #1 singles. Mandy Wells (Fr., Pampa, TX/Pampa H.S.) won a key match at #5 singles, defeating Meyer, 7-5, 7-5.

The only MSU wins in singles came in three sets at #4 singles and #6 singles. Bixby defeated Pennington, 7-6, 2-6, 6-1 at #4 singles, while Sarah Butler downed Sarah Salazar, 5-7, 7-5, 6-1 at #6 singles.

The Zias host West Texas A&M University on Sat., Feb. 12. Match time is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. (MST).
