EASTERN NEW MEXICO WOMEN’S TENNIS
SHUTS OUT WEST TEXAS A&M

PORTALES, NM — The Eastern New Mexico women’s tennis team, ranked #18 nationally in NCAA Division II, shut out visiting West Texas A&M, 9-0, on Sat., Feb. 12 at the Zia Softball Complex. The victory improved the Zias to 3-0 during the 1999-2000 season, including 2-0 this spring.

It was ENMU’s second victory over WTAMU since the beginning of the school year. The Zias defeated the Lady Buffs, 8-1, on Oct. 16 in Canyon, Texas. Eastern’s #1 singles player, Layla Turner (So., Casa Grande, AZ/Casa Grande Union H.S.), defeated Yu Chung Li, 6-0, 6-0 to lead the sweep of the Lady Buffs.

Turner is ranked #6 in NCAA Division II in the ITA singles rankings. All six singles players for ENMU won their matches in straight sets.

The toughest matches came at #3 singles, where Lisa Weinman (Fr., Albuquerque, NM/West Mesa H.S.) took a close 6-4 win in the first set, before claiming the second set, 6-1, and at #5 singles, where Mandy Wells (Fr., Pampa, TX/Pampa H.S.) won 6-1 in the first set, then slipped past Christina Vera, 6-4 in the second set.

In doubles, Turner and senior Julie Stiles (Roswell, NM/Goddard H.S.) teamed up to defeat Jennifer Rains and Amy Dominguez, 8-1. Turner and Stiles are ranked #6 in NCAA Division II in doubles. Stiles also won her singles match, defeating Rachel Pendergrass, 6-1, 6-1. At #2 doubles, Weinman and sophomore Sarah Pennington (Sweetwater, TX/Sweetwater H.S.) edged Rachel Pendergrass and her sister Adrienne Pendergrass, 8-5, at #2 doubles.

The #3 doubles flight was won by Wells and Sarah Salazar, 8-4, over Vera and Yu Chung Li. The Zias do not play again until Mar. 10-12 when they will be at the New Braunfels Tournament in New Braunfels, Texas.

Following the tournament, ENMU will play 6 consecutive home matches between Mar. 18 and Apr. 8.
