Rachel Mohler, Sarah Rempp hit HRs for ENMU

PORTALES, NM — Sophomore third baseman Rachel Mohler (Las Vegas, NV/ Green Valley H.S.) hit a 3-run homer in the first game and junior shortstop Sarah Rempp (Greeley, CO/Central H.S.) hit a 3-run homer in the second game, as Eastern New Mexico University swept New Mexico State University, 5-2 and 12-6, in a double-header, Feb. 23 at Zia Softball Field.

ENMU upped its record to 9-6. New Mexico State dropped to 9-9.

Mohler’s home run broke open a scoreless game in the third inning. Enida Rosales (Sr., 2B, Glendale, AZ/South Mountain College), who singled with two outs, and Rempp, who followed with a walk, were on first and second when Mohler sent a line drive over the left field fence. It was her fourth home run of the season.

The Roadrunners pulled within 3-2 on a pair of runs in the 4th inning. Chris Stephens scored on a wild pitch and Christina Munoz drove in Jodi Schicker with single to left field. Senior pitcher Adrienne Conner (Prescott, AZ/Glendale College) entered the game during the 4th inning, and did not allow a run the rest of the way. She was credited with the victory, and improved to 5-1.

Two of her other wins were against Nebraska-Kearney, ranked #2 in NCAA Division II, and Southeastern Oklahoma, the defending Lone Star Conference champion. The Zias added two insurance runs to secure the win.

Kim Paschall (Jr., CF, Midland, TX/Midland H.S.) drove in one of the runs with a single in the fourth inning. Paschall scored the second run in the 6th-inning run, on a one-out single by Rosales.

In the second game, the Zias led 2-0 after two innings, but had to rally from a 6-2 deficit later in the game. NMSU scored 3 runs in the fourth inning, then added 3 more in the fifth stanza.

The Zias battled back with 5 runs in the fifth. Eastern took the lead for good, 7-6, when junior catcher Rachel Valenzuela (Mesa, AZ/South Mountain College) hit a 2-RBI triple to right field. Rosales and Mohler hit doubles during the inning. Rempp’s home run gave the Zias a 10-6 lead with two outs in the bottom of the sixth.

The Zias added two more runs in the inning, then held NMSU scoreless in the seventh. The Roadrunners got players to second and third, but a strikeout, a fly out and a ground out ended the game.

Dawn Hunt (Fr., P/1B, Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad H.S.), who pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings in the 5th and 6th, earned the win. She also had 3 hits in 4 at bats, while scoring 3 runs and recording an 1 RBI during the game.
