BRANDY BATES HITS WINNING 3-POINTER WITH LESS THAN THREE SECONDS LEFT
STEPHENVILLE, TXBrandi Bates (Jr., G/F, Plainveiw, TX/Plainview H.S.) connected on a 3-point shot with 2.3 seconds remaining, as the Eastern New Mexico University Zias defeated Tarleton State University, 51-49, in a Lone Star Conference South Division game on Sat., Jan. 29.

The Zias have won five consecutive games, and are 12-6 overall and 6-3 in the LSC South. ENMU Head Coach Wayne Moore, in his 20th season, needs just three wins to reach the 300-victory mark. Tarleton State fell to 7-11 overall and 4-6 in the LSC South.

Bates’ game-winning shot negated a pair of comebacks by the TexAnns. ENMU led 25-10 with 6:05 left in the first half, only to see TSU go on a 13-0 run that cut the lead to 25-23 at the half.

In the second half, the Zias led by nine points, 42-33, with 11:49 left, but Tarleton State took a 48-47 lead with 3:00 remaining on two free throws by Sarah Little. ENMU tied the game when Bates sank the second of two free throws with 2:24 left.

TSU took a 49-48 lead at the 1:09 mark, as Garvin also made the second of two free throws. Neither team scored the rest of the way until Bates’ 3-pointer.

Eastern received the ball with 23 seconds left on the alternating possession rule after forcing a held ball on defense. The Zias missed a shot with eight seconds left, but Tarleton State was called for traveling as two TSU players collided on the rebound.

After a timeout, Bates took advantage of ENMU’s final possession, giving the Zias their third win by three points or less in the last eight days (69-66 over TAMU-Kingsville at Greyhound Arena on Jan. 22 and 64-61 at Midwestern State on Jan. 27). TSU lost by three points or less for the third time since Mon., Jan. 24.

Bates scored 12 points and led the Zias with 11 rebounds. Missy Frazier (So., G, Levelland, TX/South Plains College), also scored 12 points, and recorded 4 assists. Bobby Wallin (Jr., Post, Moriarty, NM/Moriarty H.S.) contributed 7 points and 9 rebounds. ENMU earned a 41-30 rebounding edge, but had 24 turnovers, compared to 17 turnovers by TSU.

ENMU returns home for three games this coming week. The Zias open the week by hosting Oklahoma Panhandle State in a non-conference game on Mon., Jan. 31 (6:00 p.m. MST).

ENMU also takes on Angelo State on Thur., Feb. 3 (6:00 p.m. MST), and plays Abilene Christian on Sat., Feb. 5 (6:00 p.m. MST). ENMU plays 5 of its last 7 LSC games at home.
