Wayne Moore Earns 299th Career Victory

PORTALES, NM — Junior forward Katheryne Hickman (San Antonio, TX/Castle Hills Baptist H.S.) scored a game-high 20 points and grabbed 8 rebounds, leading Eastern New Mexico University to a 76-58 victory over Angelo State University, in Lone Star Conference action, Feb. 3.

It was ENMU’s 7th consecutive win, and improved the Zias to 14-6 overall and 7-3 in the LSC South. Angelo State dropped to 5-14, 3-7 in conference play. The Zias’ win, coupled a 65-56 win by West Texas A&M over Abilene Christian, moved the Zias into sole possession of third place in the LSC South.

West Texas (8-2) remained in second place, while ACU (6-4) fell into fourth place. ENMU Head Coach Wayne Moore earned his 299th victory. He will get his first shot at win number 300 on Sat., Feb. 5, when the Zias host Abilene Christian at 6:00 p.m. (MST). Moore, who graduated from ENMU in 1965, is in his 20th season as Eastern’s head coach.

Against Angelo State, the Zias led by 16 points, 24-8, with 9:11 remaining in the first half. ASU responded with a 15-3 run over the next 4:20 that cut the lead to 27-23. Eastern closed the half with a 14-4 run of its own, and held a 41-27 advantage at halftime.

The Rambelles pulled within 8 points, 53-45, at the 10:59 mark of the second half on two free throws by Kandace Etheredge. The Zias scored the next 11 points to take control of the game. Hickman’s 20 points moved her into 19th place on Eastern’s all-time scoring list with 697 career points. She needs just 2 points to reach Bria Norris (1995-99), who currently holds 18th place at 699 points.

Joining Hickman in double figures for ENMU was Brandi Bates (Jr., G/F, Plainview, TX/Plainview H.S.), with 16 points and 4 rebounds. Hickman was 6 of 9 from the field (3 of 3 three-pointers), while Bates connected on 5 of 7 field goals and was 6 for 6 at the line.

Point guard Jody Avent (Jr., G, Stinnett, TX/South Plains College) provided 11 assists (2 short of the ENMU record) and tallied 8 points. Bobbie Wallin (Jr., Post, Moriarty, NM/ Moriarty H.S.) scored 8 points and grabbed 6 rebounds.

Angelo State was topped by Sheryce Jacobs with 14 points and 7 rebounds. Kim Moore contributed a double-double, with 11 points and 10 boards.
