ZIAS FALL TO OUACHITA BAPTIST IN LSC TOURNEY
ARKADELPHIA, AR — Jamie Scheppmann scored 38 points and Ouachita Baptist University shot 53.8% from the field, as the Lady Tigers defeated Eastern New Mexico University, 82-67, in a Lone Star Conference Tournament quarterfinal game, Feb. 29 in Arkadelphia, Ark.

The loss ended ENMU’s season at 17-10. Ouachita Baptist improved to 19-8 overall. With the win, OBU advanced into an LSC semifinal game against Texas A&M-Kingsville on Friday (May 3).

TAMUK will host the LSC semifinals and championship game in Kingsville, Texas. The title game is set for Saturday (May 4). ENMU trailed 45-34 at the half, as Scheppmann scored 20 of her points. Mary Ann Caldwell ended the period with a jumper for OBU as time expired.

The Zias rallied in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Eastern began the half with a 20-9 run that tied the game, 54-54, with 11:35 remaining. Katheryne Hickman (Jr., F, San Antonio, TX/Castle Hills Baptist H.S.), who finished as ENMU’s top scorer with 17 points, started the rally with a 3-pointer and recorded a total of 8 points during the offensive surge. Lenny Hartley (Jr., G, Roy, NM/Roy H.S.) tied the game by sinking the first of two free throws.

Eastern took its first lead of the game, 55-54, on a free throw by Bobbie Wallin (Jr, Post, Moriarty, NM/Moriarty H.S.) with 9:40 remaining. The Zias held a two-point lead, 60-58, at the 8:03 mark, and the game was tied, 62-62, with 6:59 left.

The Lady Tigers regained the lead for good with 6:38 remaining, on a pair of free throws by Scheppmann. OBU led by just three points, 67-64, with 5:51 on the clock, but the Lady Tigers went on a 13-0 run that made the score 80-64 at the 1:24 mark. Scheppmann hit two 3-pointers and two free throws during the rally.

Scheppmann (Sr., G, Cove, AR/Louisiana Tech) was 12 of 18 from the field and 11 of 12 at the line. She also had 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. The Lady Tigers sank 27 of 51 field goals overall (52.9%) and made 21 of 28 free throws.

Other double-digit scorers for OBU were Corrie Gilliland and Jeannie Kennedy, each with 10 points. Kennedy also led all players with 10 rebounds.

ENMU shot 37.7% for the game (26 of 61). The Zias made 15 of 24 free throws. In addition to Hickman, other top scorers were Wallin with 12 points, and Hartley and Jody Avent (Jr., G, Stinnett, TX/South Plains College) with 10 points apiece. Hickman hauled down 7 rebounds and Wallin added 6 boards for the Zias.
