ZIAS OPEN LSC SOUTH WITH 55-48 WIN OVER TSU
ENMU Improves to 7-3 Overall

PORTALES, NM — Eastern New Mexico University outscored Tarleton State University 34-22 in the second half to overcome a 5-point halftime deficit and defeat the visiting TexAnns, 55-48, Jan. 4 at Greyhound Arena.

It was the Lone Star Conference opener for ENMU, which improved to 7-3 overall, 1-0 in the LSC South. TSU fell to 4-5 overall and 1-1 in the LSC South.

Tarleton State held a 26-21 halftime lead. Shea Kester scored 10 first half points for the TexAnns with one field goal and 8 of 10 free throws. Neither team shot well in the first half, with TSU sinking 5 of 19 shots (26.3%) and ENMU making 7 of 24 shots (29.2%). ENMU continued to shut down Tarleton State’s offense in the second half, limiting the TexAnns to 27.3% shooting (6 of 22).

ENMU struggled on offense as well, but shot 35.7% (10 of 28) in the second half. The Zias took the lead for good, 41-40, with 8:15 remaining on a jump shot by Ginger Armacost (Fr., G, Lubbock, TX/Abernathy H.S.). TSU remained close the rest of the way, never trailing by more than 5 points until the final seconds.

TSU trailed by just a single point, 49-48, with 3:21 remaining, on a jump shot by Tiffanie Bowen. The TexAnns did not score again, as ENMU sank 6 of 9 free throws in the final 2:03 to secure the victory.

Brandi Bates (Jr., G/F, Plainview, TX/Plainview H.S.), who went 6 of 8 at the line for ENMU in the second half, made 5 of 6 three throws in the closing minutes. She finished the game with 8 points.

Amanda Hewitt (Sr., Post, San Antonio, TX/Madison H.S.) led the Zias with 12 points. She sank 5 of 9 field goals and contributed 6 rebounds. Missy Frazier (So., G, Levelland, TX/South Plains College) provided the Zias with 11 points and 5 boards. Bobbie Wallin (Jr., Post, Moriarty, NM/Moriarty H.S.) led all players with 7 rebounds, helping ENMU achieve a 44-31 rebounding edge.

Tarleton State was led by Kester, who finished with 13 points (9 of 12 free throws). Misty Garvin scored 10 points and Alyson Galbraith topped the TexAnns with 6 rebounds.

Eastern New Mexico plays its next to games on the road, starting at Abilene Christian on Sat., Jan. 8 at 5:00 p.m. (MST). The Zias then travel to San Angelo, Texas to take on Angelo State on Mon., Jan. 10 at 5:00 p.m. (MST).
