WEST TEXAS USES STRONG SECOND HALF
TO DEFEAT ZIAS AT GREYHOUND ARENA
Lady Buffaloes Improve to 14-2 Overall

PORTALES, NM — The Lady Buffaloes of West Texas A&M University, ranked #13 in NCAA Division II, led Eastern New Mexico University by just two points, at halftime, but pulled away for a 65-46 victory in Lone Star Conference action, Jan. 15 at Greyhound Arena.

WTAMU, which held a 25-23 lead at the intermission, improved to 14-2 overall and 6-1 in the LSC South. ENMU dropped to 7-6 and 1-3 in the LSC South.

West Texas opened the second half with a 10-2 run, as the Lady Buffs took a 35-25 advantage. WTAMU led 43-31 with 9:39 left, and held a 54-39 margin with 4:18 remaining.

The Lady Buffs shot 57.9% in the second half (11 of 19), while limiting the Zias to just 23.1% (6-26) over the final 20 minutes. For the game, West Texas shot 43.2% (19 of 44) and ENMU shot 29.8% (17 of 57). WTAMU earned a 42-39 rebounding margin, as Latraica Spencer led all players with 10 caroms. Brandi Green and Andrian Quihuis added 7 rebounds each.

ENMU led 13-7 early in the game, and held the lead for most of the first half. West Texas achieved its two-point halftime margin on a basket by Quihuis with just 4 seconds left. The top scorer for Eastern was Brandi Bates (Jr., G/F, Jr. Plainview, TX/Plainview H.S.) with 8 points. Katheryne Hickman (Jr., P/F, San Antonio, TX/Castle Hills Baptist) and Amanda Hewitt (Sr., P, San Antonio, TX/Madison H.S.) each provided the Zias with 6 points.

Overall, 8 ENMU players contributed at least 4 points. Hickman and Hewitt grabbed 6 rebounds apiece to lead the Zias on the boards. Bates had 5 rebounds, and also recorded 2 assists and 3 steals.

Eastern New Mexico plays its next two games on the road. The Zias will be at Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas on Mon., Jan. 17 for a 6:00 p.m. (MST) tipoff. ENMU will play at Texas A&M-Commerce on Tues., Jan. 18 at 6:00 p.m. (MST).
