ZIAS EDGE LADY INDIANS, 64-61
Hewitt Gives ENMU Lead with 2 FTs, then Scores Clinching Basket

WICHITA FALLS, TX — The Eastern New Mexico Zias led by 13 points at halftime, but had to rally from a 61-60 deficit in the final two minutes to take a 64-61 road victory over Midwestern State, Jan. 27 in a Lone Star Conference game. Senior post Amanda Hewitt (San Antonio, TX/Madison H.S.) scored the go-ahead points on two free throws with 1:36 left, then clinched the win with a jump shot with 16 seconds remaining.

The win extended Eastern’s current winning streak to four games and upped the Zias’ overall record to 11-6. ENMU also improved to 5-3 in the LSC South. Midwestern State fell to 5-12 overall and 4-4 in the LSC South.

Both teams began the evening tied with Tarleton State and Abilene Christian for 3rd place in the South Division. ENMU Head Coach Wayne Moore increased his career victory total to 296 games. He needs four wins to reach the 300-victory mark. Moore is in his 20th season at ENMU.

The Zias trailed early in the game, but led for most of the first half. Junior guard Jennifer Dvorak (San Antonio, TX/Madison H.S.) scored for ENMU with 3 seconds left in the half, as Eastern took a 33-20 advantage into the locker room.

MSU scored the first five points of the second half to cut the deficit to eight, 33-25, but the Zias answered with a 5-0 run for a 38-25 lead with 16:08 remaining. The Zias claimed an 11-point lead, 51-40, when Missy Frazier (So., G, Levelland, TX/South Plains College) sank two free throws with 7:21 left. Midwestern State outscored the Zias 21-9 during the next 5:25 to take a 61-60 lead.

Hewitt was the only player to score during the final 1:56. Her free throws at the 1:36 mark gave the Zias the lead for good, and her jumper with 16 seconds left secured the win. MSU missed two 3-pointers in the closing seconds.

Junior post players Katheryne Hickman (San Antonio, TX/Castle Hills Baptist H.S.) and Bobbie Wallin (Moriarty, NM/Moriarty H.S.) led ENMU with 13 points each. Hewitt and Brandi Bates (Jr., G/F, Plainview, TX/Plainview H.S.) added 10 points apiece. The Zias earned a 46-34 rebounding edge, with Hickman grabbing a team-high 8 rebounds.

TeNay Garrett led the Lady Indians with 19 points and 18 rebounds. She scored 15 of MSU’s 20 points in the first half. Heather O’Neal added 11 points and J.J. Anderson scored 10.

The Zias continue their two-game road trip on Sat., Jan. 29 at Tarleton State University. Game time is set for 5:00 p.m. (MST).
