DESIGNATED HITTER MATT MASIAREK NAMED TO GTE ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA THIRD TEAM
PORTALES, NM — Eastern New Mexico University senior designated hitter Matt Masiarek (Brisbane, Australia/Lamar C.C.) has been named to the 2000 College Division GTE Academic All-America Third Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Masiarek was one of just three designated hitters named to the College Division squad as a first team, second team, or third team selection.

Overall, 34 athletes were selected to receive Academic All-America recognition. Masiarek earned a .369 batting average and hit a team-high 10 home runs during the 2000 season. He tied for fourth in the Lone Star Conference with .24 homers per game.

Masiarek also hit 4 doubles and a triple, while leading the Greyhounds with 41 RBIs, a .646 slugging percentage and a .458 on-base percentage. His 10 homers were two short of the school record, set by Steve Marquez in 1995 and 1996. Masiarek owns a 3.57 GPA and is majoring in Biology.

In two seasons since transferring from Lamar Community College, he has earned 76 hits, 58 runs, 15 homers, 64 RBIs and a .332 career batting average. He was named Second Team All-LSC South this season and was voted to the Lone Star Conference South Division All-Academic Team. ENMU concluded the 2000 season with a 25-21-1 overall record.

The Greyhounds earned a 10-8 record and a third place finish in the LSC South Division. Eastern was in the running for the LSC South title and an LSC Tournament berth until the final day of the season.

The College Division GTE Academic All-America Team includes players at NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA colleges and universities. Players named to the GTE Academic All-America Team were starters or key reserves with cumulative grade point averages of 3.2 or higher (4.0 scale). Each player had to be at his current college or university for at least one full year.

Masiarek is the second GTE Academic All-America selection in as many years for ENMU. Last year, center fielder Sam George (Sr. in 1998-99) was also named to the third team after hitting .397 with 14 doubles, 2 triples and 9 homers.
