ST. MARY’S DEFEATS GREYHOUNDS, 10-6
PORTALES, NM — St. Mary’s University (Texas) built a 9-3 lead in the first two innings, then held off Eastern New Mexico University to earn a 10-6 triumph over ENMU in the Southwest Shootout, Feb. 25 at Greyhound Field. St. Mary’s improved to 11-2 on the season, while ENMU dropped to 3-7-1.

The Greyhounds, led by a triple from Andy Hostetler (So., CF, Albuquerque, NM/Valley H.S.) and four walks, built a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. St. Mary’s countered with 6 runs in the bottom of the inning.

The Rattlers scored all but one of the runs with two outs. St. Mary’s added two more runs in the second inning. Danny Sanchez opened the inning with a double, and Ross Beardsley reached base on a one-out error. Jason Ganter followed Beardsley with a 3-run homer.

ENMU pulled back within 9-5 on two runs in the third stanza. Junior shortstop David Jones (Sierra Vista, AZ/Eastern Arizona College) hit a triple to score junior second baseman Jeff Zipser (Las Vegas, NV/Victor Valley College) with two outs.

The Greyhounds cut the deficit to 9-6 when Jeff Thibodeaux (Sr., 1B, Apple Valley, CA/ Victor Valley) singled and scored in the fourth. St. Mary’s answered with a run in the bottom of the inning. The game was ended due to the tournament time limit midway through the fifth inning.

Eastern plays again today (Feb. 25) against Tarleton State University. The Hounds will take on St. Mary’s for a second time tomorrow (Feb. 26) at 12:30 p.m., before closing out the tournament against Metropolitan State (Colo.) on Sun., Feb. 27 at 2:30 p.m.
