GREYHOUNDS DOWN ST. MARY’S AT SW SHOOTOUT
PORTALES, NM — Eastern New Mexico University plated 7 runs in the second inning, as the Greyhounds rallied from a 4-1 deficit on their way to a 9-5 victory over St. Mary’s University (Texas), Feb. 26 at the Southwest Shootout.

ENMU, which lost to St. Mary’s 10-6 yesterday (Feb. 25), improved to 4-7-1 on the season. The Rattlers fell to 11-4.

St. Mary’s opened the scoring with 3 runs in the top of the first inning. Ross Beardsley doubled and scored for the Rattlers during the inning. David Jones (Jr., SS, Sierra Vista, AZ/ Eastern Arizona College) tripled as the leadoff batter in the bottom of the first, and later scored on an infield single by Andy Hostetler (So., CF, Albuquerque, NM/Valley H.S.).

After St. Mary’s increased its lead to 4-1 in the top of the second stanza, the Hounds quickly took control of the game in the bottom of the inning. ENMU scored 7 runs on 5 hits, including an RBI-double by freshman third baseman Steven Romano (Las Cruces, NM/Onate H.S.) and a two- run single by Matt Masiarek (Sr., 1B, Brisbane, Australia/Lamar C.C.).

Both teams scored one more run the rest of the way, but Eastern’s second-inning explosion prevented St. Mary’s from regaining the lead. The game was ended on the tournament time limit after six innings.

Hostetler was 2 for 4 for the Hounds. Senior catcher Jeromy Neumann (Visalia, CA/Victor Valley College) was 1 for 2 with an RBI and 2 runs scored. Junior third baseman Eddie Jimenez (Tucumcari, NM/N.M. Military Institute) also was 1 for 2. He scored once and drove in one run.

Catcher Joseph Contreas led St. Mary’s with 3 hits in 3 at bats. Contreas scored once and recorded 2 RBIs. Fernando Tedefa also drove in 2 runs for the Rattlers.

Eastern New Mexico plays its final game of the Southwest Shootout tomorrow (Feb. 27) against Metropolitan State University. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m. at Greyhound Field.
