ZIAS SWEEP TRINITY UNIVERSITY, 2-1 AND 7-1 The Zias won the first game 2-1 behind a six-hitter from junior pitcher Jennifer Harrer (Albuquerque, NM/Hope Christian H.S.). ENMU won the second game 7-1, as the Zias scored four times in the second inning and junior shortstop Sarah Rempp (Greeley, CO/Central H.S.) hit two triples. Trinity dropped to 7-6 following the losses. In the opener, Harrer gave up a solo homer to Sheila Deane in the fourth inning, but otherwise shut down the Tigers. Harrer allowed 5 singles, but struck out 3 batters and gave up just 2 walks. She improved to 3-3 on the season. ENMU took a 1-0 lead in the third inning, before Deane’s homer tied the game. The Zias regained the lead with a run in the sixth inning, then finished strong on defense. ENMU had no errors in the game, while Trinity had one error. Rempp hit a triple and scored during the opener, while sophomore third baseman Rachel Mohler (Las Vegas, NV/Green Valley H.S.) went 2 for 3 with a double. Trinity received 2 hits in 3 at bats from shortstop Kyle Schumacher. In the second game, Rempp’s two triples helped the Zias cruise to victory. Senior second baseman Enida Rosales (Glendale, AZ/South Mountain College) and freshman left fielder Nicole Archibeque (Albuquerque, NM/Valley H.S.) also tripled for ENMU. The Zias led 5-0 before Trinity plated a solo run in the third inning. Eastern increased its lead to 6-1 with a run in the top of the fourth, then added another insurance run in the sixth stanza. Junior pitcher Suzy Seitzinger (Bloomfield, NM/Bloomfield H.S.) earned the win by allowing just one run in 5 innings. She upped her pitching record to 4-3 on the season. She also went 1 for 2 at the plate with a double and a walk. The Zias play at the Incarnate Word Tournament, Thur., Mar. 9 through Sat., Mar. 11 in San Antonio. ENMU then plays at Oklahoma Panhandle State on Tue., Mar. 14 in a non-conference double-header. First pitch in Goodwell, Okla. is set for 12:00 noon (MST). |
