ENMU OPENS FIRST ANNUAL ZIA CLASSIC
PORTALES, NM — The Eastern New Mexico Zias won no-hitters over Sul Ross State and Adams State, and lost to small college power Oklahoma City, in pool play Feb. 25, at the First Annual Zia Classic. The Zias routed Sul Ross State, 20-0, then lost 4-3 to Oklahoma City, before concluding the day with a 2-0 victory over Adams State. The Zias earned second place in Pool A behind Oklahoma City. ENMU also upped its overall record to 11-7 on the season.

Against Sul Ross State, the Zias recorded a run-rule win in just 2 1/2 innings. The Zias zoomed out to a 15-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, then added 5 runs in the second stanza.

Meanwhile, junior pitcher Suzy Seitzinger pitched a no-hitter. She struck out 8 batters and gave up just one walk. Seitzinger also hit three doubles to go 3 for 3 at the plate, with 6 RBIs and 3 runs scored. Kim Paschall (Jr., CF, Midland, TX/Midland H.S.) went 2 for 2, scoring 2 runs and driving in 2 more. Enida Rosales (Sr., 2B, Glendale, AZ/South Mountain College), Kristy Jones (Fr., RF, Artesia, NM/New Mexico State) and Nicole Archibeque (Fr., OF, Albuquerque, NM/ Valley H.S.) each added a double for the Zias.

Against OCU, the Zias fell behind 3-0 after four innings. The Stars scored twice in the bottom of the first, then added a single run in the third inning. First baseman Lauren Hollis drove in all three runs with a pair of homers.

ENMU forged a tie score, 3-3, by tallying 3 runs in the fifth inning. Sarah Rempp (Jr., SS, Greeley, CO/Central H.S.) and Rachel Mohler (So., 3B, Las Vegas, NV/Green Valley H.S.) each hit an RBI single. Rempp also scored on a wild pitch. OCU moved in front, 4-3, in the bottom of the fifth.

Stephanie Grange singled to open the stanza. Pinch runner Libby Echols advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, then scored on a single by Christie Zuquing. The game was called after the run scored due to the time limit.

Jennifer Harrer (Jr., P, Albuquerque, NM/Hope Christian H.S.) threw a 5-inning no-hitter against Adams State. Rosales, the leadoff batter for ENMU, opened the game by reaching on an error. She moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Rempp, then went to third on a passed ball.

Rosales scored when Mohler hit into a one-out fielder’s choice. Mohler also drove in Rosales with an insurance run in the fifth inning. Rosales got on base with a fielder’s choice, then stole second base. She scored when Mohler doubled to right field.

The two runs were more than ENMU needed to win with Harrer holding Adams State in check. Harrer struck out 7 batters and allowed 3 walks. BrieAnne Brock pitched well for Adams State as well, allowing just 4 hits and striking out 4 batters.

The First Annual Zias Classic continues tomorrow (Feb. 26) with bracket play. The Zias’ first game is set for 9:30 a.m. (MST) at the Portales Industrial Park against St. Mary’s (Texas). Bracket games will also be played at Zias Softball Field, with the championship game set for 3:00 p.m. (MST).
