FERRIS STATE DEFEATS ENMU, 6-3
NEW BRAUNFELS, TX — Ferris State University (Michigan), ranked #12 in NCAA Division II defeated 18th-ranked Eastern New Mexico University, 6-3, Mar. 10 at the New Braunfels Tournament. FSU, which won the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title in the fall, improved to 13-0 for the year.

ENMU, 3-1 in dual matches, lost for the first time in the 1999-2000 season. The Zias will compete for the Lone Star Conference title this spring.

Ferris State won the match on the strength of close victories at #2 singles and #2 doubles. Sharrie Kindig of FSU edged Julie Stiles (Sr., Roswell, NM/Goddard H.S.) of ENMU at #2 singles, taking a 3-6, 6-4, 10-6 victory. Stiles gave a strong performance despite recently returning from a leg injury, coming back from a 7-0 deficit in the last set.

FSU’s other critical win was earned by the #2 doubles team of Ellen Frost and Suzanne Batten, who slipped past ENMU’s team of Lisa Weinman (Fr., Albuquerque, NM/West Mesa H.S.) and Sarah Pennington in a 2-hour tie-breaker, 9-8 (7-4). Ferris State gained an early edge on the Zias by sweeping the three doubles flights.

The Bulldogs also won #1 singles, as Jennifer Garvey defeated Layla Turner (So., Casa Grande, AZ/Casa Grande Union H.S.), 6-1, 6-1. Even so, ENMU split the singles flights, earning wins from Weinman at #3 singles, Sarah Salazar at #6 singles and Mandy Wells (Fr., Pampa, TX/Pampa H.S.) at #5 singles. Weinman and Salazar each won in a tie-breaker, with Weinman downing Ellen Frost, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 10-5, and Salazar defeating Hulda Grin, 6-2, 1-6, 10-6.

ENMU will remain in New Braunfels for one match on Saturday and another match on Sunday. The Zias then return home to open a six-match homestand with two matches on Sat., Mar. 18 (vs. Texas Woman’s at 9:00 a.m. MST; vs. Fort Hays State at 4:00 p.m. MST).
