ZIAS FINISH POOL PLAY WITH 2-2 RECORD AT INCARNATE WORD TOURNAMENT
SAN ANTONIO, TX — Eastern New Mexico University split a pair of games on Fri., Mar. 10 to finish pool play with a 2-2 record at the Incarnate Word Tournament in San Antonio, Texas. ENMU defeated William Woods, 7-1, but lost to St. Mary’s (TX), 4-1, to finish third in Pool B of the 20-team tournament.

Eastern New Mexico concluded the day with a 15-11 overall record. The tournament moves into bracket play on Sat., Mar. 11. ENMU will open the day against East Central University, which finished second in Pool A.

Eastern New Mexico took a 4-0 lead over Williams Woods in the bottom of the first inning. The key hit of the inning was a triple by sophomore third baseman Rachel Mohler (Las Vegas, NV/ Green Valley H.S.), who drove in two runs on the play.

William Woods scored once in the third inning, but the Zias answered with three runs in their next at bat. Mohler singled with one out, and Dawn Hunt (Fr., 1B, Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad H.S.) followed with a triple, giving ENMU a 5-1 lead. Kristy Jones (Fr., RF, Artesia, NM/New Mexico State) added a sacrifice fly later in the inning, and Suzy Seitzinger (Jr., LF, Bloomfield, NM/Bloomfield H.S.) scored on an error to complete the 3-run offensive surge.

Junior pitcher Jennifer Harrer (Albuquerque, NM/Hope Christian H.S.) threw all 7 innings to record the win. She improved to 4-3 on the season, while striking out 9 batters and allowing 2 walks. She gave up just five hits, all singles. Mohler recorded 2 hits in 3 at bats, while scoring twice and driving in two runs. Hunt and junior catcher Rachel Valenzuela (Mesa, AZ/South Mountain C.C.) each added one RBI for the Zias.

In Eastern’s final match of pool play, St. Mary’s scored twice in the seventh inning to win by three runs. ENMU led 1-0 after one inning, but the Rattlers took the lead with a pair of runs in the second stanza. Natalie Hill doubled to start the inning, then scored when Ashley Boedeker followed with a single. Boedeker later scored on a single by Jessica Jiminez.

The score remained 2-1 until St. Mary’s increased its lead in the seventh inning. Lauren Mitchell tripled and Elizabeth Card singled to earn RBIs during the inning.

The Zias were unable to rally in the bottom of the seventh, although junior designated hitter Erica Sussex (Bloomfield, NM/ Bloomfield H.S.) connected for a single with two outs. Sussex finished with 2 hits in 3 at bats to top the Zias. Card led the Rattlers with 2 hits in 4 at bats. ENMU starting pitcher Adrienne Conner took the loss and fell to 5-5 on the season.
