ACU WILDCATS DOWN ENMU ZIAS
NEW BRAUNFELS, TX — Abilene Christian University, ranked #7 in NCAA Division II swept all six singles flights on its way to a 7-0 victory over 18th-ranked Eastern New Mexico University, Mar. 11 at the New Braunfels Tournament. ACU also won two of three doubles flights to earn its final point under the tournament’s scoring system.

ENMU fell to 3-2 overall following the loss. Eastern New Mexico played without #2 singles and #1 doubles player Julie Stiles (Sr., Roswell, NM/Goddard H.S.), who was unable to play due to a leg injury.

Five ENMU players moved up a singles flight to account for Stiles’s absence. Betsy Cata (So., Espanola, NM/Espanola Valley H.S.) played #6 singles.

In doubles action, Cata replaced Stiles, allowing ENMU’s #2 doubles team of Sarah Pennington (So., Sweetwater, TX/Sweetwater H.S.) and Lisa Weinman (Fr., Albuquerque, NM/ West Mesa H.S.) and the #3 doubles team of Mandy Wells (Fr., Pampa, TX/Pampa H.S.) and Sarah Salazar (Fr., Albuquerque, NM/Saint Pius X H.S.) to remain intact. Pennington and Weinman recorded Eastern’s only victory, an 8-5 win over Lacy Johnson and Lacy Jordan.

Under the tournament’s scoring system, ENMU did not receive a point. ACU won two of the three doubles matches and received one point for winning doubles. Two points would have been awarded if either team had swept all three doubles flights. Wells gave ACU its toughest match of singles play.

The ENMU freshman lost in a tie-breaker to Lacy Jordan, 6-3, 3-6, 10-2. Layla Turner (So., Casa Grande, AZ/Casa Grande Union H.S.), ENMU’s top player, lost to Sarah Taweel at #1 singles, 6-1, 6-4.

ENMU concludes its stay in New Braunfels with another match on Sunday (Mar. 12). The Zias will take on NCAA Division I opponent Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.
