TAMU-CORPUS CHRISTI EDGES THE ZIAS
NEW BRAUNFELS, TX — Eastern New Mexico University, ranked #18 in NCAA Division II, won the top three singles flights, but NCAA Division I opponent Texas A&M-Corpus Christi won two doubles flights and the remaining three singles flights to take a 4-3 victory over the Zias, Mar. 12 at the New Braunfels Tournament.

Under the tournament’s scoring system, each team received a total of three points for its three singles victories. TAMU-CC received the final point for winning two of the three doubles flights.

Layla Turner’s (Fr., Casa Grande, AZ/Casa Grande Union H.S.) 6-0, 6-1 win over Kristin Hedger of TAMU-CC at #1 singles led Eastern’s efforts in the singles flights. Lisa Weinman (Fr., Albuquerque, NM/West Mesa H.S.) won #2 singles over Micah de Koning, 6-1, 2-6, 10-7, and Sarah Pennington (So., Sweetwater, TX/Sweetwater H.S.) downed Melissa Cucciniello at #3 singles, 6-2, 6-1. ENMU won #2 doubles, 8-1, as Weinman and Pennington overwhelmed the team of Micah de Koning and Denise Amagan.

TAMU-Corpus Christi won #1 doubles, as Cucciniello and Kelli Kukk defeated Turner and Betsy Cata (So., Espanola, NM/Espanola H.S.), 8-2. The Islanders also won #3 doubles, with Hedger and Ellian Rohrbacher downing Mandy Wells (Fr., Pampa, TX/Pampa H.S.) and Sarah Salazar (Fr., Albuquerque, NM/Saint Pius X H.S.), 8-6.

With the loss, ENMU fell to 3-3 for the season. The Zias played without senior Julie Stiles (Roswell, NM/Goddard H.S.), who was unable to play for the second consecutive day. Stiles is recovering from a leg injury.

Eastern New Mexico begins a six-match homestand on Sat., Mar. 18, when the Zias host Texas Woman’s University and Fort Hays State University (Kan.). Match time against TWU is scheduled for 9:00 a.m., with the ENMU vs. FHSU match set to start at 4:00 p.m.
