EASTERN NEW MEXICO DOWNS TEXAS WOMAN’S, 7-2 Eastern’s top doubles team of sophomore Layla Turner (Casa Grande, AZ/Casa Grande Union H.S.) and senior Julie Stiles (Roswell, NM/Goddard H.S.) defeated TWU’s Setareh Rambally and Sheila Paguyo, 8-3, to lead the doubles sweep. Sarah Pennington (So., Sweetwater, TX/Sweetwater H.S.) and Lisa Weinman (Fr., Albuquerque, NM/West Mesa H.S.) won #2 doubles, 8-2, over Leanne Dalby and Kristel Race, 8-3. Mandy Wells (Fr., Pampa, TX/Pampa H.S.) and Sarah Salazar (Fr., Albuquerque, NM/Saint Pius X H.S.) won #3 doubles, 8-2, over Lindsey Reinke and Sherry Osier of TWU. Turner was victorious at #1 singles over Rambally, 6-3, 6-4. Stiles, who is recovering from a knee injury, did not play singles, so the remaining Zias moved up a flight. Weinman won #2 singles over Paguyo, 6-2, 6-1, and Pennington took #3 singles, 6-2, 7-5 over Dalby. Wells also recorded a victory for ENMU, as she defeated Race, 6-1, 6-3. TWU’s only wins came at #5 and #6 singles. Lindsey Reinke outlasted Salazar, 2-6, 6-4, 10-7 (tie-breaker) at #5 singles, and Sherry Osier defeated Betsy Cata (So., Espanola, NM/ Espanola Valley H.S.), 6-3, 6-0. Eastern New Mexico is scheduled to play Fort Hays State University at 4:00 p.m. (MST) this afternoon (Mar. 18). Prior to its match with ENMU, Fort Hays will take on TWU at the Zia Tennis Complex. |
