ZIAS DROP PAIR TO WNMU
Mustangs Win Games Between Instrastate Rivals

SILVER CITY, NM Western New Mexico University pitcher Adriana Carbajal threw a two-hit shutout in the first game of a double-header, helping the Mustangs sweep a pair of games from Eastern New Mew Mexico University, Mar. 20 in Silver City, N.M. The Mustangs won the opener 8-0, then outscored the Zias, 12-6, in the second game.

ENMU fell to 18-14 following the defeats. Carbajal was solid for WNMU in the opener. She struck out 3 batters and allowed no walks. The only hits against her were a double by ENMU’s sophomore third baseman Rachel Mohler (Las Vegas, NV/Green Valley H.S.) and a single by freshman first baseman Dawn Hunt (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad H.S.). WNMU won the first game in five innings on the run rule.

Shellie Broyles led the Mustangs with 3 hits in 3 at bats. She pounded out 2 doubles, scored 3 times, and drove in 1 run. Raean Stubbs added 2 hits in 3 at bats. The Mustangs scored 3 runs in the first, added one tally in the third and completed the victory with 4 runs in the fifth. In the second game, ENMU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first stanza, but WNMU answered with 4 runs in the bottom of the inning.

The Mustangs also scored once in the third inning for a 5-1 lead. WNMU plated 3 more runs in the fourth inning for an 8-1 lead. The Zias pulled within 8-6 by scoring 4 times in the fifth inning and once in the sixth, but the Mustangs secured the win by tallying 4 runs in the bottom of the sixth.

ENMU’s top hitter in the second game were Enida Rosales and Mohler, who both went 3 for 4 during the game. Mohler hit a double and a triple to go with a run scored and an RBI. Rosales doubled and scored 3 times.

For the Mustangs, pitcher Holly Justice struck out 4 in recording the complete-game victory. She also went 3 for 3 at the plate with two home runs, 4 RBIs and 4 runs scored. Broyles and Kassey Lemons each contributed one homer apiece. Stubbs went 2 for 3 and scored 3 runs.

The Zias and the Mustangs play again on Tues., Mar. 21. First pitch in the opening game of the double-header is set for 1:00 p.m. (MST).
