WNMU DEFEATS ZIAS, 4-0 AND 6-2
SILVER CITY, NM Western New Mexico University defeated Eastern New Mexico University, 4-0 and 6-2, to sweep a double-header Tues., Mar. 21 in Silver City, N.M. The Mustangs, which also defeated the Zias twice on Mon., Mar. 20, swept the four-game series. ENMU fell to 18-16 with the losses.

WNMU’s starting pitcher, Holly Justice, threw a one-hitter in Tuesday’s first game. Eastern’s only hit was a single to Rachel Mohler (So., 3B, Las Vegas, NV/Green Valley H.S.) in the first inning. Mohler, the third batter of the game, finished 1 for 3 for the Zias. Justice faced just 27 batters in 7 innings. She gave up only 2 walks.

Two batters reached first base on errors, one was hit by a pitch and one benefited from a dropped third strike. Junior pitcher Suzy Seitzinger (Bloomfield, NM/Bloomfield H.S.) took the loss for ENMU. She allowed just 5 hits, but WNMU scored 4 times in the fifth inning to break a 0-0 tie.

Adriana Carbajal and Kassey Lemons opened the inning with back-to-back doubles, and Celina Estrada added a double with two outs. ENMU also committed 2 errors during the inning, and two of the Mustangs’ runs were unearned. Seitzinger fell to 4-4 on the season.

Neither team had a player with more than one hit. Five WNMU players were 1 for 3 during the contest, with Estrada, Lemons and Edna Garcia recording the game’s only RBIs. In the second game, Western New Mexico overcame a 2-0 deficit by scoring 6 times in the fifth inning.

The Mustangs recorded 7 hits of their 11 hits during the inning. Raean Stubbs doubled to start the inning, then scored on a double by Estrada. Shellie Broyles followed with the big hit of the comeback, a two-run homer that gave the Mustangs a 3-2 lead. Justice batted immediately after the home run, and hit a single to left. Genevieve Ramos pinch ran for Justice, advancing to third on a double by Carbajal and scoring on a sacrifice fly by Beckie Hartman. Lemons and Michelle Manning also scored runs for WNMU.

Eastern scored single runs in the first and third innings. Seitzinger walked with one out in the first, then scored when Mohler followed with a double to left field.

In the third, Mohler reached on a fielder’s choice, advanced to second on a single by Sarah Rempp (Jr., SS, Greeley, CO/Central H.S.) and scored on a single by Dawn Hunt (Fr., 1B, Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad H.S.). Kim Paschall (Jr., CF, Midland, TX/Midland H.S.) was 2 of 3 for ENMU, and Mohler was 2 of 4.

WNMU was led by Carbajal, who went 3 for 3, and Stubbs, who went 3 for 4. ENMU returns to action this weekend with the Zias’ first Lone Star Conference games of the season.

Eastern hosts LSC South Division rival Tarleton State University on Fri., Mar. 24 at 1:00 p.m. (MST) and on Sat., Mar. 25 at 12:00 noon (MST).
