DeHoyos Strikes Out 11, Throws 3-Hitter

STEPHENVILLE, TX — Eastern New Mexico University sophomore pitcher Gabe DeHoyos (Artesia, NM/Trinidad J.C.) struck out 11 East Central batters and ENMU pounded out 14 hits, as the Greyhounds defeated the Tigers, 14-0, Mar. 3 at the Lone Star Conference First Pitch Tournament hosted by Tarleton State University.

Eastern New Mexico improved to 5-9-1 with the victory. ECU dropped to 6-8.

The LSC First Pitch Tournament provides an opportunity for LSC South Division teams to play LSC North Division squads. ENMU plays two more crossover games on Sat., Mar. 4, as the Hounds take on Southwestern Oklahoma at 8:00 a.m. (MST) and play Central Oklahoma at 1:00 p.m. (MST). LSC First Pitch Tournament games do not count in the LSC standings.

DeHoyos limited the Tigers to just 3 hits — all singles — as he recorded his first decision of the season. The hard-throwing right-hander lowered his earned run average to 3.54, while increasing his strikeout total to 31 in 20 1/3 innings pitched.

Eastern New Mexico’s 14 hits were all singles. The Greyhounds also took advantage of 7 errors by East Central. ENMU scored once in the second inning, then took control of the game with 6 runs on 7 hits in the third stanza.

The score remained 7-0 until the Greyhounds added one run in the fifth inning and 6 more in the sixth inning. The game was ended after six innings on the 10-run rule.
