GREYHOUNDS SPLIT DOUBLE-HEADER
ENMU Wins 8-6, NMHU Takes 5-2 Victory

PORTALES, NM — Eastern New Mexico University and New Mexico Highlands University opened the 2000 baseball season by splitting a double-header Feb. 5 at Greyhound Field. ENMU won the opener 8-6, with NMHU claiming a 5-2 triumph in the second game.

In the opener, Eastern New Mexico rallied from a 3-0 deficit after one inning. The Hounds scored a single run in the second inning and two runs in the third inning, then moved in front with a run in the bottom of the fourth stanza.

Steven Romano (Fr., 3B, Las Cruces, NM/Las Cruces H.S.) singled to drive in ENMU’s first run. Dallas McMann (Fr., RF, Amarillo, TX/Randall H.S.) hit an RBI-triple and Jeff Thibodeaux (Sr., 1B, Apple Valley, CA/Victor Valley College) recorded a sacrifice fly to score Eastern’s runs in the third inning. The go-ahead run was scored by Jeff Zipser (Jr., 2B, Las Vegas, NV/Victor Valley College) on a double by Chris Stewart (Jr., LF, Albuquerque, NM/ Manzano H.S.).

NMHU tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the fifth, but Eastern regained the lead in the bottom of the inning. McMann doubled and scored, while Thibodeaux hit a two-RBI single. The Greyhounds plated four runs during the inning.

Tim King (Jr., P, Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad H.S.) recorded the win. Gabe DeHoyos (So., P, Artesia, NM/Trinidad J.C.) earned a save.

NMHU’s starter, Ronnie Jaramillo took the loss. In the second game, NMHU scored single runs in the first, second and fifth innings for a 3-0 lead.

The Hounds answered with two runs in the sixth. David Jones (Jr., SS, Sierra Vista, AZ/ Eastern Arizona College) and Thibodeaux each drove in a run with a double during the inning.

The Cowboys won the game with two runs in the seventh. Neil ReBell reached on an error with two outs, as Taylor Speier and Joe Densmore scored. ENMU had runners at first and second with one out in the bottom of the inning, but a fielder’s choice and a ground out ended the game.

Jonathan Wheeler was the winning pitcher. Jerry Macias (Fr., P, Las Cruces, NM/Las Cruces H.S.) suffered the loss. NMHU had just 3 hits, but ENMU walked 10 batters and made 3 errors.

Stewart finished the day 5 for 8 at the plate for ENMU (2 for 4 second game). Thibodeaux was 3 for 5 with 4 RBIs and 2 runs scored on the day. Barry Nixon was 3 for 6 during the double- header for NMHU. He was 2 for 3 on stolen bases.

ENMU and NMHU meet again tomorrow (Sun., Feb. 6). First pitch for the single 9-inning game is set for 1:00 p.m. (MST).
