GREYHOUNDS SCORE 7 RUNS IN FIRST INNING,
CRUISE PAST SOUTHWESTERN OKLAHOMA, 9-1

STEPHENVILLE, TX — The Eastern New Mexico University baseball team scored 7 runs in the first inning on its way to a 9-1 victory over Southwestern Oklahoma State University, Mar. 4 at the Lone Star Conference First Pitch Tournament hosted by Tarleton State University.

ENMU improved to 6-9-1 overall, while Southwestern Oklahoma fell to 5-8.

Eastern pounded out 12 hits, giving the Greyhounds a total of 26 hits in two LSC First Pitch games. David Jones (Jr., SS, Sierra Vista, AZ/Eastern Arizona College) was 2 for 2 and walked twice. Steven Romano (Fr., 3B, Las Cruces, NM/Las Cruces H.S.) went 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs, and Dallas McMann (Fr., RF, Amarillo, TX/Randall H.S.) finished the game 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs. Jeff Zipser (Jr., 2B, Las Vegas, NV/Victor Valley College) hit a triple for the Greyhounds. Senior first baseman Todd Carter (Chico, CA/Lassen J.C.) and senior left fielder Joe Clabaugh (Mustang, OK/Western Oklahoma State) each doubled for ENMU.

All nine starting batters for the Greyhounds scored a run and recorded at least one hit during the game. Southwestern Oklahoma was held to six hits. Bryan Cartwright and Jamie McClure each went 2 for 3 at the plate to lead the Bulldogs.

ENMU starting pitcher Chris Stewart (Jr., Albuquerque, NM/Manzano H.S.) earned the win. The left-hander threw the first 4 2/3 innings, allowing just one run and five singles. Rich Thomas (So., Albuquerque, NM/Trinidad J.C.) pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, and Bryan Shores (Jr., Midland, TX/Frank Phillips J.C.) threw one full inning without allowing a run.

The LSC First Pitch Tournament provides an opportunity for LSC South Division teams to play LSC North Division squads. ENMU plays one more crossover game today (Mar. 4), as the Hounds finish the tournament against the University of Central Oklahoma. LSC First Pitch Tournament games do not count in the LSC standings.
