BATES NAMED 2ND TEAM ALL-LSC SOUTH
Hickman, Frazier, Avent Chosen Honorable Mention
PORTALES, NM — Eastern New Mexico University junior guard/forward Brandi Bates (Plainview, TX/Plainview H.S.) has been named Second Team All-LSC South Division as selected by the LSC South head coaches. Bates was a key player as the Zias achieved a 17-10 overall record, including a 10-6 mark in the LSC South.

Other ENMU players joining Bates on the All-Conference team were Honorable Mention selections Katheryne Hickman (Jr., P/F, San Antonio, TX/Castle Hills Baptist H.S.), Missy Frazier (So., G, Levelland, TX/South Plains College) and Jody Avent (Jr., G, Stinnett, TX/South Plains College). Hickman was named Honorable Mention All-LSC South for the second consecutive season, while Frazier and Avent were first-time selections.

West Texas A&M senior forward Latraica Spencer was named Player-of-the-Year, Angelo State forward Kim Moore was chosen Freshman-of-theYear, and Texas A&M-Kingsville senior guard Annetta Anglin was voted Defensive Player-of-the-Year. TAMU-Kingsville’s head coach, Jill Willson, who led the Lady Javelinas to the LSC South Division crown and the LSC Tournament championship, was chosen Coach-of-the-Year.

Bates started all 27 games and was second on the team in scoring. She totaled 295 points and averaged 10.9 points per game. She added 118 rebounds (4.4 per game), and led the team with 43 steals (1.6 per game).

Bates scored a career-high 23 points in a 70-68 loss at Angelo State on Jan. 10. She sank the winning 3-pointer with 2.3 seconds left in a 51-49 victory at Tarleton State on Jan. 29. Bates also helped the Zias earn a 10-2 record at Greyhound Arena.

Hickman led the Zias in scoring with 307 points, an average of 12.3 points per game. She also led the team with 32 three-point field goals, and shot 40.0% (32 of 80) from three-point range. Hickman ranked 6th in the LSC in free throw shooting (61 of 75, 81.3%). She also contributed 126 rebounds in 25 games played (5.0 per game).

Hickman scored a career-high 29 points in Eastern’s 85-79 win at TAMU-Commerce on Jan. 18. She ended the season ranked 15th on ENMU’s all-time scoring list with 786 points.

Frazier was a defensive standout, who also provided 8.1 points per game and sank 18 three-point shots. She converted 74.6% at the free throw line (53 of 71), averaged 3.0 rebounds per game and earned a total of 30 steals (1.3 per game). A knee injury forced her to miss the final three games of the regular season plus ENMU’s LSC Tournament loss at Ouachita Baptist.

Avent was Eastern’s starter at the point guard position. She played in all 27 games and averaged 8.2 points per game. She also supplied a team-high 94 assists (3.5 per game) for the Zias.

Avent recorded a personal-best 11 assists in a 76-58 triumph over Angelo State on Feb. 3, finishing just two assists short of the ENMU single game record. Her 42 steals during the season ranked her second behind Bates on this season’s ENMU squad.

The Zias earned their fourth consecutive winning season and 11th straight year at .500 or better. ENMU also qualified for the LSC Tournament for the 13th consecutive season (14th time overall). The Zias lost to Ouachita Baptist, 82-67, in the quarterfinals.

Head Coach Wayne Moore picked up his 300th career win on Feb. 5, when the Zias defeated Abilene Christian, 74-68, at Greyhound Arena. Moore finished the year with an overall record of 302-224 (.574) in 20 seasons at ENMU. Z
