DeHOYOS, HOSTETLER NAMED
FIRST TEAM ALL-LSC SOUTH

PORTALES, NM — Eastern New Mexico University baseball players Gabe DeHoyos (So., RHP, Artesia, NM/Trinidad J.C.) and Andy Hostetler (So., CF, Albuquerque, NM/Valley H.S.) have been named to the 2000 All-Lone Star Conference South Division First Team as selected by the LSC baseball coaches.

ENMU Head Coach Phil Clabaugh was voted LSC South Coach-of-the-Year. Overall, 17 players were named to the All-LSC South First Team. The Greyhounds also placed five players on the All-LSC South Second Team.

ENMU’s Second Team selections were junior shortstop David Jones (Sierra Vista, AZ/Eastern Arizona College), senior designated hitter Matt Masiarek (Brisbane, Australia/Lamar C.C.), freshman third baseman Steven Romano (Las Cruces, NM/Onate H.S.), junior left fielder Chris Stewart (Albuquerque, NM/Manzano H.S.) and senior first baseman Jeff Thibodeaux (Apple Valley, CA/Victor Valley College).

DeHoyos earned a 6-2 record and 3 saves for the Greyhounds this season. He finished second on the team in earned run average (4.01) and led the team with 65 strikeouts in 60 2/3 innings pitched.

DeHoyos started 9 games, including 5 complete-game appearances and 2 shutouts. Overall, he made 16 appearances and limited opponents to a .228 batting average. DeHoyos was in his first season at ENMU after transferring from Trinidad Junior College.

Hostetler led the Greyhounds with a .391 batting average. He also topped the squad with 68 hits, 174 at bats, 14 doubles and 14 stolen bases. Hostetler hit 5 triples and 2 home runs, while scoring 39 times and earning 35 RBIs. He achieved a .563 slugging percentage and was 14 of 19 (.737) on stolen base attempts. In two seasons at ENMU, he has a .349 career batting and 20 career stolen bases (20 of 26, .769). He started all 47 games this year.

Clabaugh guided the Greyhounds to a 25-21-1 overall record and a 10-8 mark in the LSC South Division (3rd place). He earned his 300th career win in a double-header sweep at Oklahoma Panhandle State on Mar. 14. Clabaugh, who previously coached four seasons at Western New Mexico, has won 219 games in nine seasons at ENMU (219-253-1, .464). His overall career record stands at 315-388-2 (.450). This year’s team was in the running for the LSC South title and an LSC Tournament berth until the final game of the season.

Jones led the team with 49 runs and led the LSC with a school-record 7 triples. He started all 47 games, earning a .306 batting average and a .538 hitting percentage. His 23 extra-base hits (11 doubles, 7 triples, 5 homers) and 20 walks were both team highs for the season.

Jones tied for second on the team with 53 hits and tied for third with 33 RBIs. His all-around performance earned him the utility position on the All-LSC South Second Team.

Masiarek earned a .369 batting average and hit a team-high 10 home runs. He tied for fourth in the LSC with .24 homers per game. Masiarek also hit 4 doubles and a triple, while leading the team with 41 RBIs, a .646 slugging percentage and a .458 on-base percentage.

His 10 homers were two short of the ENMU record, set by Steve Marquez in 1995 and 1996. In two seasons since transferring from Lamar Community College, Masiarek earned a .332 batting average, 76 hits, 58 runs, 15 homers and 64 RBIs.

Romano, who redshirted at New Mexico State in 1998-99, was a key player in his first collegiate season. He hit .345 for the Greyhounds, while pounding out 11 doubles and 1 homer. He connected for 49 hits, scored 33 runs and provided 33 RBIs. He also earned a solid .967 fielding percentage.

Stewart finished the year with a .327 batting average. He earned 32 hits in 98 at bats, to go with 18 runs and 19 RBIs. He also supplied the Hounds with 6 doubles and 1 home run. Stewart, in three seasons at ENMU, has a .311 career batting average and has scored 62 runs. He also has recorded 89 hits and driven in 52 runs.

Stewart also was a key pitcher for the Greyhounds this season. He achieved a 5-4 record on the mound, and led the Hounds with a 3.71 ERA. He struck out 35 batters in 51 innings pitched. He owns a career record of 7-6.

Thibodeaux hit .363 and scored 35 runs this season. He ranked second on the ENMU squad with 37 RBIs, and tied for second with 53 hits. He also blasted 12 doubles and 2 homers, while achieving a .486 slugging percentage.

Thibodeaux played in all 47 games, including 45 starts. He led the team with 293 putouts, and supplied a .981 fielding percentage at first base. During two seasons at ENMU since transferring from Victor Valley College, Thibodeaux totaled 114 hits, 317 at bats, 72 runs and 78 RBIs. He claimed an impressive .360 career batting average, while earning 21 homers, 4 triples and 6 home runs.
